They're much more similar than Spanish/Portuguese. They're essentially different standardised dialects of the same language and are mostly mutually intelligible. Perhaps compare them to say.. I'm not sure many people speak this (or plan to learn it), but I know Bahasa Indonesia, and through that, Tagalog (Filipino). I speak bahasa Indo as well as well as Korean. I speak Bahasa Indonesia as well. :) Edit: And I've just started learning Javanese/Basa Jawa... though I'd be surprised if any...
