Re: Yazidi and ISIS ethnic cleansing

This is where the fact that 'democracy' is more than simply 'voting' should be pointed out. Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas may use voting to get power, but they aren't democratic.

Re: Syria Civil War Threatens to Spread

Sometimes I wonder at how these people don't realize that if they do something like this, the bigger enemy (ISIS) is going to win, and then he's going to see himself ceremoniously beheaded when they do. Or he might escape out of the country with a large sack of money at the last minute and his sold...

Re: Syria Civil War Threatens to Spread

As do I. But if you remove some of the suffering from War, that makes it less abhorrent, and thus increases the chance of War. If in battle, I'd really like it if my opponent adhered to the conventions, but I'd like it even more if there wasn't a battle at all. Unless you can get a Geneva Conventio...

After an investigation, Israel has published what it says is proof that they did not kill 15 civilians at the UNRWA school in Bet Hanoun.

EDIT - the video they mention is the first on this page.

Re: Israel/Palestine discussion

Then why not bomb Gaza to rubble hunt down and kill every member of Hamas you can find? Crush them no matter the cost in lives. You can make the argument that this is exactly what the Allies did to end WW2. No matter what you believe about the spokesman in the video, he believes he is right. Can yo...

Re: Israel/Palestine discussion

Groups can be destroyed without destroying their members. People can leave the group. Hopefully one day the Palestinian people will view Hamas as their enemy and have the power to do something about it. But I reckon we are talking decades. So there will be decades more of killing on both sides. Ine...

Re: Israel/Palestine discussion

The Israelis must do what is required for peace. That might be knocking down buildings and shelling cities, but it might be something else. Since we have decades of experience showing that force alone will not work, they need to try something else. You seem to be complaining that the Israelis alrea...

Indulge my curiosity Zmic. What would Israel's best and most "mature" option have been instead? One that doesn't involve constant terrorist attacks for the next few decades? Israel should try to be wise rather than try to be clever. And they should stop believing that they have this confl...

Re: Israel/Palestine discussion

Yeah, as I pointed out Hamas is not strong enough to have a monopoly on legitimate violence. That is to say they can't crack heads to make the rockets stop. (this presumes they want to of course.) Meanwhile, and this is rather shocking, the Israelis seem to be running out of ideas. The security ser...

Re: Israel/Palestine discussion

Israel and Hamas accepted a UN proposal for humanitarian cease fire for 12 hours yesterday. Israel then extended for an extra 4, and then an extra 24. Hamas has been firing a lot of rockets during that time, including to central Israel a few minutes ago. Israel still not responding.

Anyone know how many rockets were fired yesterday? The IDF seems to have not made his usual Twitter report. Re: Israel/Palestine discussion

They won an election in 2006, there was supposed to be another one in 2010 (and another one this year) but they haven't happened. So they don't really have a mandate any more. If you go by that though, neither does Abbas. So all those negotiations were totally pointless, and so will any future ones.

Great editorial from Haaretz on this topic: Israel’s best weapon against Hamas: Giving the Palestinians hope . Finally some common sense. The author has a short memory. UN-run school and refugee shelter shelled earlier. 15 dead and dozens injured. This is apparently the 4th UN building that Israel has hit so far in the campaign. Every civilian death is a tragedy. Your numbers are a bit out of date. In the last 2 weeks well over 2000 rockets have been fired into Israel. Two civilians have been killed by those rockets, and at least 4 other Israelis have been killed in the last 2 moths by terror attacks.

You mean the 48 borders. Which prior to 67, the Arabs kept demanding a return to. Do we judge morality by death rate now? Er, don't we always? I mean, a serial murder who kills 30 people is judged much more harshly than a murderer that kills one. The morality of an action is intimately linked to the amount of suffering it causes or is likely to cause. Ten times as many Germans d...
