I did 3 different solutions to ten, and then they all were easily modified to make the 8. It took more work than just deleting the missing; it took some moving, however it was a path in the right direction.

Allright... now try making a die of sorts with one of the four center holes open when viewed from the top, 2 from the front, and 3 from the right. The best I've gotten is 19... To solve this it doesn't matter really which you leave open, just how many.
