Re: 0145: "Parody Week: Dinosaur Comics"

Hello from the future! As of November 7th, 2011, T-Rex has an "official" opinion on they as a gender neutral third person pronoun: ... don't even try to trot out "they" for me, English. Don't even. "They" is plural and has always been plural... Apparently, "thon&qu...

She might be using base three, or four, as anything below five won't use four as a digit. The probability is going to be around one in three, without any information about the girl herself. Of course, without the information that her base has no four, the probability will tend towards 0, as it could...

Re: 0944: "Hurricane Names"

It didn't refresh for me when I first checked, but minutes later... On checking the wikipedia, it seems there are around 100,000 Chinese characters, I had thought there were tons more. Still, there are more languages than just English, and it seems sort of stupid to restrict yourself to just one lan...

http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/hurricane_names.png Alt text: "After exhausting the OED, we started numbering them. When overlapping hurricanes formed at all points on the Earth's surface, and our scheme was foiled by Cantor diagonalization, we just decided to name them all "Steve". Your...

Would it be more disturbing if they were actually intending for the water to change to blood, or if "Physics" just made it happen out of mischief?

Re: 0806: Tech Support

This comic made me more interested in Haiku then bad/good/secret tech support. Anyone have any first hand experiences with it? I've tried it a bit. Boots lightning fast, and it seems relatively stable. Only problem is somewhat weak wireless card support, but that's the same as any early-development...

Maybe it could tack against the wind. Tumbleweeds have got sail technology, right?

Is it just me, or does this remind anyone else of Gary Larson's Far Side cartoons? Exact same format, similar subject material, and that style of humour. Maybe Randall's rereading them.

Re: "Dependencies" discussion(#754)

any examples of this in an actual linux repository? The Gentoo portage tree occasionally gets one, where packages block each other. It's usually sorted out within a day though. Also, just emerged ImageMagick, to rotate a bunch of images, which has Boost as a dependency. Sometimes, precompiled distr...

Schemer here, I'm considering learning CL for fun though. Scheme is much smaller, which is a definite plus in my books.
Are we going to include elisp in this discussion too? ;)

Re: Favorite/interesting command line apps?

Does mplayer count? (It does open a window when playing a video) I use it to watch all my movies. Based on some of the others, I'd say it does. Also, you can play videos using mplayer just using the console, either black and white, or in colour. mplayer -vo aa video.mp4 CACA_DRIVER=ncurses mplayer ...

I'm surprised no one's mentioned http://xkcd.com/640/. I think that's a much stronger reference than http://xkcd.com/402/ Thank you dreamcontrol! I thought of that comic right after the latest one, but I couldn't find it with ohnorobot. I don't see the lesbian theme, it just doesn't make sense in t...

Re: "Phobia" discussion (#752)

For those talking about some twister movie, I'm 99% sure he's actually referencing a tv show on the discovery channel called storm chasers. Pretty sure this is a reference to an earlier comic, either http://xkcd.com/402/ or another one which I can't find at the moment. In any case, it's a good one,...

Sites still have pop-ups? Who is the target? Un-tech savvy internet users? First time internet users? Will they ever give up and move on? Doubtful I suppose. I know what you mean, I can't actually remember the last time I saw a popup. All the major browsers have popup blocking as stock-standard, so...

Would surfing without a popup blocker be like having casual sex with everyone who walked past your house?
Of course, real browsers have built-in popup blocking. (typed that as pope blocking, but that would be useful too)

Re: "Book Burning" discussion

Love this one, but would burning a Kindle actually produce enough toxic fumes to kill eight (or three) people? They [Kindles] aren't very big, and from what I can see from the newspaper, it looks like the people are outside. Also, the wind looks like it's dispersing the cloud pretty fast. Hmm...

Is it just me, or have the comics been particularly good recently? Yesterday's title-text was fantastic, and this one is even better. I guess Randall's on a roll.
