Re: Trump presidency

Well, but the fleshy bits of other living things aren't toxic just by chance: in many cases they evolved that way to stop us from eating them, in a perpetual arms race in which we retaliated by developing countermeasures allowing us to resist or even digest those chemicals. If humans and aliens tur...

Re: Trump presidency

On the whole, US tariffs are currently at or near the lowest levels ever. In particular, the US has unusually low tariffs on metals and minerals as compared to the rest of the world. Do you have any info on that? I don't think the EU has high tariffs on metals and minerals, certainly not the amount...

There's a vaccine for it now? So as a general public health matter, it's better to have chickenpox be endemic in the general population, meaning that essentially no child escapes it. It's like a kind of natural vaccination programme that you can't avoid. I remember my sister-in-law saying she'd bee...

Re: EU commission orders Apple to pay €13bn as back taxes

You could force countries to join by refusing to sign double tax treaties with them if they don't join. If a US company has a group member in Ireland, the thing that prevents the US from also taxing the Irish income is the fact that both countries have a treaty on the avoidance of double taxation. M...

The other solution is to say "paying royalties to a parent company in another country is a blatant tax-evasion scam so we're taxing you on the profit you made if we ignore those payments". But if the company doesn't pay royalties to its parent company in the other country, that other coun...

Re: EU commission orders Apple to pay €13bn as back taxes

Ireland is a small country, but not that small. With 5 million people they still have a significant domestic market. If Apple was really paying only 50 euros per million of profit, how much were they paying in total? They made $53 billion profit worldwide in 2015. So maybe €10 billion in the EU? So...

But courts apply the law, if you change the law to make it possible, courts will uphold that.
