Re: Things you love about your OS

Generally, I like the concept of package management. The ability to do one of: aptitude update; aptitude safe-upgrade emerge --sync; emerge -auD world zypper up pacman -Syu and have absolutely every program you've ever installed update all at once is pretty damned slick. Neither Windows nor Mac OS X...

Google does scare me, and if I could find an equally good free email service that I could trust not to read my messages, I'd switch to it. But where would I find that? Even if an equally good service existed elsewhere, and I could be relatively certain it's not going to disappear or turn to crap an...

If there's some work you need to do that does not require the Internet at all, then unplug your Internet connection and bury the cable somewhere. Alternatively, remove the antenna from your wireless card, delete your WPA or WEP or whatever key, and hide whatever reference material you have that tel...

Re: "Steal This Comic" Discussion

Amazon makes it really easy to find and buy used music, movies, and books. Half does too, as do some independent record stores. Used CDs are legal, usually cheaper than album downloads, lossless, DRM-free*, and don't increase the label's revenue. As if that weren't enough, you also get to feel moral...

If you're just looking to slim things down, there's always Xfce . One step further and you have something like IceWM . You get a task bar and a root window image thingy. On the other hand, if you want something that's downright tiny (something like six source files and no dependencies beyond the X l...

Dude, I totally came up with a better idea than a Smoot. It was a chihuahua. Basically, the unit of length was the average length of a chihuahua. lastly, an honestly stellar option is to consider going to community college for the first year or two to do basics and get a better idea of what you'd like to study. it's cheaper, sort of a step between high school and university, and usually CC's have a ton of topics to choose from. I personally prefer 4:3 (square) ratio monitors, wide format is basically pointless for coding IMHO. Standard resolutions are: 15": 1024x768 17": 1280x1024 19": 1280x1024 20": 1600x1200 Since 17" and 19" monitors usually have the same number of pixels, I consider 19&quo...

Re: Computer DVD players and DVD regions

My understanding is that RPC1 basically allows the computer to query the drive's region and the disc's region. In the case of a mismatch the software can prevent playback. RPC2 enforces the region match in hardware. As far as I can tell, VLC won't play back region-mismatched discs on an RPC2 drive. ...
