Re: My write-up of the "Blue Eyes" solution (SPOILER A

"The guru speaks English" is not an axiom. " I see someone with blue eyes is a statement in English" is an axiom. "This is not a trick question" is just a cop out for a lack of clarity. But even if I accepted that reasonable assumptions are permissible in a logic puzzl...

Re: Puzzle : gambling game

I might be misunderstanding the rules, so let me clarify - three players each put up $1, and two lose their dollar while the third walks away with $1 plus his original dollar? If this set up is correct, then imagine the game from the perspective of the "house". Each round, the house takes ...

Re: My write-up of the "Blue Eyes" solution (SPOILER A

No, I think the recursion still works... The base case is still the same (if there's only one blue-eyed person, then a "Secret announcement to all the other blue-eyed people" is vacuous and changes nothing), and the inductive case still works (if n blue-eyed people would leave on night n,...

This question starts by assuming the answer is generally correct regarding how the people/dragons come to the conclusion that they must leave the island/transform into birds. The argument here is that the fact that there are Green eyes is mutual knowledge, not common knowledge. For it to be common knowledge all dragons must know there are green eyes (1), they must know the other dragons know that there are green eyes (2), and they must know the other dragons know they k...

Re: Assumptions in Math (Calculus) word problems

This is all nice in theory. In practice, there are no universal assumptions that can be said to hold for all questions/problems in all settings. Of course we use assumptions to simplify problems, but our choice of assumptions is critical. Some assumptions are situational - for example, on a test you...

I think the sentiment "Harry is too pure of heart to cast Avada Kedavra" is balogne. He's very idealistic but once his ideals have been proven wrong there's no telling what he'll be capable of. In the context of the narrative, I 'm pretty sure we're supposed to assume ...

I wouldn't say you're being incredibly thick, as this is called the world's hardest logic puzzle for a reason. You do seem to be missing the two key points to the 'official' solution. I read through the post you linked (with a .com appended to the end), and I think it's a fine idea that relies on extra assumptions to come to its conclusion.
