Best as I could figure the situation out, she had had obsessive-compusive behaviors at some point which got her diagnosed with OCD, which re...

Re: 1106: "ADD"

I have a little boy... So one of the issues is: if medication changes your emotional range, then it will change your kid's idea of what a normal emotional range is. I'm the child of a medicated schizophrenic and a don't-ask. It's taking a lot of unwinding, which seems to make my life better. It wou...

Re: 1096: "Clinically Studied Ingredient"

Well to be fair, if it was clinically studied and found to be bad or harmful the FDA/MHRA/whoever would not let it go to market, so a clinical study would guarantee its safety. I'm doing a university course that runs heavily to drug design. It seems that what happens is more like: they regulate the...

Re: 0641: "Free"

Once upon a time, I rejected a product because it was made by people who felt that they had to say that they were part of the "Lead-Free Coalition", and I figured that if they had to say it, they must be awful in the spare time when they weren't being lead-free.

Re: 1036: "Reviews"

Reviews all say to avoid that brand.

This presumes that brand-names on Chinese goods mean something more than how inventive the middle-man was this morning.

In particular, they probably don't mean that it was made in the same factory as when the brand-name was last used.

Of course the "your will" in the mouseover text is a typo... also, I'm a bit urged to say that what is called a simile might actually be a metaphor. I'm sure that it's a simile, but I can't find anything on line to help me decide, because everything online is so elementary in their descri...

Re: 0960 - "Subliminal"

I wonder if Randall could explain the USPS logo too. I've never been able to tell what it's supposed to be. I can’t tell if you’re serious, so I’ll take it at face value. It’s the disembodied head of a raptor. True fact. I thought it was a Bald Eagle breaking the sound barrier. That has so got to e...

Re: The power of XKCD (or maybe not)

I don't know if this strip has caused this or not (probably not) but if you go to Google Image search and search for "tostitos logo" guess what the fourth result is - Roger Be aware of the filter bubble. Different people see different things, depending on what they've looked at in the past.

English isn't that logical. It's got to be either a joggling or, on a better-than-average day, a juglet.

It's only the relative frequencies on Randall's view of Google, because of the filter bubble.

I'm told that scroogle.org suppresses this problem, but I don't know how.

As an antidote to the top half of this cartoon, I like the four step timing diagram in "Essays in Love" by Alain de Botton.

But I may be romanticising it.
