Re: You gotta get into Dwarf Fortress if you haven't already.

The wiki says dwaves drink about 18 units in a year. I don't see numbers on food consumption, but I would suspect it comes in around that range.

Trackpads are terrible for gaming. Can't imagine a tablet is much better. Trackballs are't too bad, but I prefer the standard mouse.

Re: You gotta get into Dwarf Fortress if you haven't already.

For one [doomed] fortress, I sealed off the entrance to my fortress after an elven caravan arrived. As it turns out, after standing around for ~ 6 months with no way home, elves go crazy. I figured they'd just wait until the walls eroded or something

A Core 2 Duo and 8800 GT are probably going to be the best stuff you'll be able to get for a reasonable price. The Geforce 9000 line is only a minor improvement in clock speed over the 8000 line, so I wouldn't suggest those unless you're looking for the highest end machine you can make.

Summer Gaming Slowdown

As usual, the months where being outside is more tolerable in a major target sales area corresponds with a lack of new products. What are you going to be playing despite this? Re: Diablo & Ripoffs: Game Balance Issues

Jade Empire and, IIRC, Marvel Ultimate Alliance both dealt with over-specialization by increasing cost to upgrade a skill as you upgraded it. Thus, you either waited around with unused skill points trying to hyper-specialize or you leveled up in a more balanced manner. Except in Jade Empire you onl...

Darik's Boot and Nuke might be what you're looking for, especially if you aren't looking to boot to *NIX to run the dd command.

[It's more or less a pretty frontend for that, though. If you want the reliability without dealing with a command line.]

Converse to the 'its not fair if paid weapons are better than the free ones' idea is the 'if I'm paying for them they should be better' idea. I'm going to vote for nvidia as well. ATi's drivers are open, in that they released the 2D part of it. The 3D part is still closed, and it seems to be because they use a lot of borrowed code they need permission to release. [I suspect nvidia does as well].
