Re: New D&D Player

Vaniver, you are absolutely correct. I was being extremely hyperbolic, because I like rogues, and they can have a great damage output if you use flanking to its utmost effect, and they were being written off as skill monkeys. Also, most campaigns I run and play in tend to be humanoid heavy and monst...

Re: Fuckhead D&D players

You win... sort of. I agree, with full context now, that fudging was probably the right thing to do. In similar situations, I have certainly fudged. But at that point, I think it's important as part of the process of growing as a DM to recognize the mistakes both you and the players made, so that yo...

Re: Fuckhead D&D players

But Axman, it seems to me like you are fucking with them. Instead of approximating the results of d20 rolls, you're approximating the results of damage rolls. But different characters can build their characters to deal wildly different amounts of damage. It takes 15 hits to kill the boss... so when ...

Re: POST HERE FIRST - INTRO THREAD THE THIRD

Hi, I'm Dan. I've been lurking for a while now, and I started posting a few days ago. I guess I need to post here first so people know for sure I'm not, uh, a robot or something. Damn, that would be cool. I wish I was a robot. Ahem. Anyway. There's my intro. Bye now. I think he's just trying to con...

Re: Fuckhead D&D players

But see, I think that bad choices should have bad results. If the players make consistently bad choices, sometimes they get fucked. If them all dying really would throw a wrench in the whole campaign, there are ways around it beyond fudging the dice. Ways that don't result in them assuming they made...

Re: Fuckhead D&D players

Okay, I have a few things to say. (rubs hands together) ... Umm... this isn't really on the main topic, though. Are derailments looked down upon on the xkcd fora? I'm still sort of new... if they are, let me know and I'll delete this post or maybe start a new topic with it or something. Not trying t...

Re: Fuckhead D&D players

I never look at it as "lying" about the rolls. When you're the GM, you get to assign "challenge modifiers" as you see fit, and sometimes you "conveniently forget" about the +5 the gnome gets for, umm, circumstance, or something... The GM's job is to make the game worth...

Re: Re:

I mean, can't you lie about your rolls and things like that? If you think being a wiener is fun . Exactly. Don't play with wieners. Speaking as someone who DMs over IRC a lot... if your life is really so pathetic that you need to cheat in a game that, by definition, you can't win at anyway... go ri...

Re: New D&D Player

I just wanted to speak up and dispute the characterizations I have seen of the rogue thus far (in this thread, I mean). The rogue isn't the "lock open" guy or the "stealth guy". He can be those things, of course. But what the rogue really is, is the damage guy. A properly made an...

I'm going to have to disagree with you there. There was plenty of fantasy before Tolkien, Not...really. He kindof pioneered the genre. Before tolkien, there was....mythology. Unless I'm mistaken. I'd *love* to hear that I'm mistaken, because I really don't like Tolkien all that much, but I have to ...
