Re: Close-Minded

I don't know what scares me more. To use an example: The homosexual community (rightly) calls the religious right close-minded as the religious right tries to block gay marriage. Isn't the homosexual community being equally close-minded, disregarding the beliefs and traditions of the religious righ...

Re: Simple Puzzle

Heres a shot at it. A A A A ==?== A A A A A A Assuming an assigned value of 1 to A, and 2 to B, etcetra, Then BAAAA ==?==AAAAAA which could then mean 6 ==?== 6, the "?" could be any charchter with which each side would be equal to and thus the statement would be made, "true". Jus...

Re: Surface area of an island

Anyway they live on this island but they don't get along very well so they decide that it would be fair to divide the island (which is a perfect circle) into two equal pieces. How will they do this using only a rope and a stick? I understand this to be the question, and that my solution satisfies t...

Re: Surface area of an island

An alternative solution. Assuming you can find the center of the island, which shouldnt be hard, you have rope and stick, measure out a piece of rope equal to 2r, have one person stand on the edge and the other to the other sideof the island untill the rope is taught, then the rope goes through the ...

Re: Drugs and other addicting things

Prohibition and all that, they tried to make alchohol illegal, but society wouldnt have it. Well, as far as alchohol is concerned, the people demand it, I dont see a conspiracy there. As far as tabbaco is concerned, its just such a huge industry with so much money to throw around, they could probabl...

Re: Viewpoints

None of the options there I feel comfortable with. I try to be as objective and consistent as possible, and let my viewpoints be formed by available data. Consequently my viewpoints change as new data gets presented. Also my surity is linked to how confident I (and communties at large) are of the da...

Re: Diabetes, Dwarfism, and Homosexuality.

It is odd that there are people here think that homosexuality is a choice. For the hetrosexuals here, do you think that you could, suddenly, chose to be attracted to men instead of women, and chose to have an inate lust for them, instead of women? Its not a choice. I might be completely misunderstan...

Couldnt the placebo effect by relevant here?

Happy light to make you happy?

Not saying that any other factors arent relevant, but that the placebo effect may be involved also.

I am done with this discussion.

You completely fail at rational and logical reasoning, instead you resort to ad hominem attacks.

Re: Peak oil?

But it is wrong to say that civilization is about to end momentarily because we can't find enough of our favorite fossil fuel to burn. Who is saying this, I assume this comment is directed at me? Unjustified gross exagerations of my attitude and position are really NOT appreciated. This is a seriou...

Re: Peak oil?

Okay, I hope this will be my last reply, I already feel like I am repeating most of my arguments and bringing in very few new points. And the gloves are coming off. you have five trivially untrue cases (2006-2007, before 2009, before 2010, around 2010, and 2016) This is an unsubstantiated claim, cal...

Re: Peak oil?

Okay, a response. Your also missing the point that when Oil production peaks there will still be fucktons of oil left in the ground Peak oil only means that we've reached maximum oil production (I.E. all known fields are being maximally exploited), not that we've hit some sort of magical brick wall ...

Re: Peak oil?

A Partial response. http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff250/BattleM00se/Peakoil1.jpg Alot of people, alot more informed than you, seem to think oil could peak, well, pretty bloody soon. The 1970's oil crisis, and yes, it was a crisis, hugely effected economies in a bad way, the only reason why it w...

Re: Nuclear Q&A with Industry

I have another question. Clearly when the spent fuel rods are removed from the reactor, there is still abunch of fuel in them, being hot and radioactive and the like? So why are they removed when they are, couldnt the be left in the reactor and continue to be used as a fuel source. Or is it a questi...

Re: Nuclear Q&A with Industry

Hi Thanks for your reply. Did a quick wiki search. Tupolev Tu-95LAL It was later learned that the Soviets did have a nuclear aircraft program, but like its US counterpart, it was entirely experimental. On 12 August 1955 the Council of Ministers of the USSR issued a directive ordering bomber-related ...

Re: Peak oil?

Erk, I feel I just have to comment on a few things here. The point, is no that oil is going to run out (even tho it will) but that it will become very much more expensive. And this is going to have huge ramifications on all economies world wide. Now, alot of people are talking about rewnewable fuel ...

Re: Nuclear Q&A with Industry

Afaik, inreference to the nuclear bomber, both the United States and the Soviets investigated this project very seriuosly. The United States, abandoned the project, when they realised that there was no way to keep the plane light enough to be able to fly. The Soviets, used very minimal shielding of ...

Re: Greed! or "Its a damn game people"

When playing a sport profesionally, as a career, I think it stops becoming just a game for those individuals. As other professionals will move between companies for better jobs and salaries, I think its fair to expect the same from professional sportsmen. I think you may be unwittingly trying to app...

Re: Does "winning" an argument mean that you are correct?

My expereince at the tender age of 24, is that it is almost impossible to change the opinion on any subject of anyone, ever. There are very, very few people who will actually consider your argument and adjust their viewpoint if its more convincing than their own, but this is severly in the minority....

Odd discussions

Hey I've recently moved into a new house and have a very interesting housemate. We find ourselves having the most obscure discussions generally about morality, evolution and religion. Whats most odd here is that these disucussions have remained VERY CIVIL and well mannered, never really experienced ...
