Re: Hard drive - missing from OS and BIOS? *vrrr* *cuh-lick*

raid 1 is abit of overkill compaired to sensible backups on a 2nd drive,
I think raid 5 while costly to setup is the most efficient way to keep you data safe without loosing lots of capacity

Re: Operating Systems

im sorry ofc nothing can be safe from social engineering but i consider that to not be the OS's fault (infact if your going to be duped linux system are the worst to get duped on as they give the user plenty of control) but i meant that if you have a well setup system if somebody was to steal your l...

Re: Operating Systems

i was referning to 99.999% sorry to confuse people with the rounding error. with a completly encryted root that checks boot for changes before booting you can be safe from local attacks and with SELINUX properly configured and buffer overflow protection, its hard to think of a theoretical let alone ...

Re: Operating Systems

Mixing the sort of repository Linux distros have with commercial software seems like it probably wouldn't turn out so hot even in the world of Linux. CNR from linspire, soon to be included in ubuntu! i have no idea how well it works? i have to admit ive only ever installed windows 98/xp + ubuntu an...

Re: Base 12 kicks all your asses

could somebody explain the difference between bases 4,8,16 and just specail ways of showing base 2, i know the same can be said for any base converting between base 2,4,8,16 is just a case of replacing every 100 with 10 or every 10000 with 10 etc ... its only base 3 that confused me with computers b...

The first real tabbed browser with any significant presence on the web was Netcaptor, created by the very talented Adam Stiles way back in 1997. .... In September of 2001, Dave Hyatt added a tabbed browsing mode to Mozilla. This feature was release in Mozilla 0.9.5 in October of 2001 In December of...

Re: CONSOLE WARS!!!

Sure the wii would be able to hold its own but marketers would label it old unless they keep up with releases. Although they currently write it off as not having good spec and its still doing great! plus with the next gen release MS and Sony will get as close to Wii without actually copying it. the ...

Re: Browsers

ive never used opera but if i didn't love being able to customize ive heard its fast (faster than gecko), compliant (looks at IE, and even firefox2) and stable (looks at firefox2) However i love to be able to twerk, and as such 90% of my problems are my fault. So my number 1 browser has to be firefo...

Re: Base 12 kicks all your asses

just taking number of (prime) factors is pointless, surely the best way to measure is in factors per size base 60 has 4 prime factors 0.06' base 12 has 3 prime factors 0.25 base 10 has 2 prime factors 0.2 (not much worse than 12) base 6 has 2 prime factors 0.3' base 2 has 1 prime factors 0.5 so in s...

Re: CONSOLE WARS!!!

Really? I must have missed the part where the Wii and DS stopped being licenses to print money. the ds is different, its a handheld they can just keep making it lighter, faster, thiner, until they have theyre next big idea (maybe wiimote stuff in it) but when the next gen comes, xbox and ps can do ...

Re: Guide to PC Part Selection

I think a few things ive learnt from my build could help others Extendability, despite large hardware market changes being hard to predict there are some things to look out for. For example getting a mobo that has an end of the line socket may be a little cheaper but it makes it impossible to upgrad...

well ill have a look, but as i see it the Ronpaul's point is to remove federal control, while this would allow for multiple currencies its very unlikely to happen, unless its needed (like in countries where thier own currency isnt secure so people trade in another currency) and alot of people that m...

Re: Processor Preference?

Intel right now because they're so fast and overclock like hell. Got my e6750 at 3.72GHz. intel lie and have been saying clock speed matters, while amd have been designing chips that actually do better work, (that said intel do work with linux (im talking making gfx card drivers and powertop etc). ...

Re: Nuclear Power, what's your issue with it?

I think one generation of nuclear reactors is exactly what is needed. By the time they need renewing we should be in a position to use renewable energy. But the problem is that most governments will fall into the "not my problem" trap and just end up relying on nuclear power when clean opt...

Both work. actually its sudo -i but all work its just that sudo bash is a whole extra 2 characters i use ubuntu but im planing on moving away, i need a stable install of linux so i can...

the Wii is new, innovative and fun, but they're aren't many games the ps3 is a hardware god (on some tasks it offers overs the best pound/processing power ratio around) but the games are just more of the same the xbox 360 has the best games sales, but most of them are just PC games (or the same as P...

Re: filesystem (besides zfs because its a given)

(In fairness, Unix's umount is no more helpful.) correcty me if im wrong but wouldnt umount -l stop writes to the disk meaning youd unmount fine but might corrupt any file being written (no risk of anything though) i lost an install when my system went down using xfs, apparently its because desktop...
