Re: The value of Sudo

The only thing I can think about is that sudo, AFAIK, runs things as root, while su will let you change to an arbitrary user. But again for the home user... how often is this done? I've never done it. Acutally sudo -u does that so there is nothing sudo cant do that su can. su is just a subest of sudo

great so you want 2 tools ( sudo & su ) to do what 1 tool could ( just sudo ) ? meaning that you have to maintain twice the code ( making exploits twice as likely) you then have to explain to users to use su -c "command" instead of just sudo "command" (you could write an alia...

Except at the rate we are using IPv4 IP addresses we will run out approximately by 2011. Don't forget there are a whole bunch of IPv4 addresses blocked off for private subnetworks, which limits the number of IP address available via IPv4 greatly. First ill admit that im not a computer scientist so im not 100% on this stuff. but is IPv6 wasteful it seams to me instead of solving the problem of running out of address space IPv6 just bumps it to stupidly big numbers (you could get an IP for every cell in your body) and as a result of this it ta...

No one was arguing that it is totally useless. The argument is on a desktop machine, for a home user, does it make sense to use it over just switching over to root?
