http://www.memtest86.com/ click download, click iso (zip), burn that to a disk, boot to it. It'll test your memory. Even if you don't think that's it, spending the half hour/hour to test it will rule it out. It pretty much has to be hardware, either that or you had the same faulty software installed...

if you check RSS, there's two versions of the comic in there. Currently comparing to see what the difference is. The numbering seems to be fixed now, though.

Quite possible, however since I'm probably going to be using either some form of server-side (php/ror/whatever) or interpreted (python) language, The problem wouldn't be that they could tamper with the usb, but that they could just pop open the software and see what exactly it does with said usb key

Nah, chrome is just faster, simpler, and more stable*. However, the extensions/addons aren't as mature as firefox's (I've yet to find something resembling firefox's downThemAll ) and it /is/ different. Also, some antiviruses do NOT like chrome, and will make it "Oh, snap!" much more often....
