Re: Is it bad for a presidential candidate to be intelligent??

... You honestly think that roughly half of the politicians in the US have trained the half of the population that keeps putting them in power to associate something negative with 'intellectualism' over the course of 70 or more years in order to use it as an attack on their opponents in political e...

I KNEW the internet made me smarter!

Unfortunately it has an inverse effect on study habits. An edge on both sides, I say.

Re: Is it bad for a presidential candidate to be intelligent??

I think it's important to distinguish between being intelligent and an intellectual. Intellectuallism (as a word) carries connotations of leftist elitism and condescention, which Obama generally avoids doing he sometimes comes across that way (mainly through media soundbites though). The public dis...

Re: 15yo Takes Nude Photos of Herself; Faces Felony Charges

This is a tough subject for me. There's always so much grey area that I feel no law could really cover it. I personally think that she definitely shouldn't be punished for doing this, assuming her friends consented and such. Also, because she's so young. I mean, even if we take as a given that she's...

Um, why is the hexagonal shape an after thought in that article?

Do we know what it is? Like, at all?

It kinda seems like a big deal to me.

Re: Vice-Presidential Debate

Frankly I was shocked by Palin's advocacy of a two state solution for Israel and Palestine. She's the one who's supposed to be appealing to the religious right and a signal state Israel is a big talking point for them. After all we can have the rapture without a unified Jewish state. Or some such n...

I also got the impression that he's just looking for a way to make Obama look bad.

I mean, he's been begging Obama to debate for months, now, and he finally gets to have a go at him and cancels because of a financial crisis that he didn't even acknowledge until...now?

Codec ringing sound from Metal Gear Solid for the win.

I recently bought a bluetooth headset for when I'm driving (cell phone + driving = illegal in NYS).

Whenever it rings I randomly crouch behind nearby objects.

Yes. The US GOVERNMENT, at least. I don't know much economics, but I think that on any sort of reasonable timescale for the collapse of the US (10 years is clearly a significant underestimate unless something crazy happens) the US economy will no longer be necessary to sustaining the world economy....

It makes you intelligent. That kind of mentality leads to Hitler.

Observe policies, not politicians.

That's not to say we don't observe what politicians do, (to measure their honesty/integrity, etc.) just that personalities really should play no part in your decision.

This thread is a perfect representation why Democrats have trouble winning over undecideds. The elitist, condensing attitudes here are sickening. The only reason Bush won in 2000 is because the Democrats thought that independents would see through the Republican smear campaign on Gore. The reason B...

I read somewhere that Mozilla/FF have said they're at a point in their release cycle where it's very unlikely that any significant/groundbreaking new features will be added to firefox for quite a while (since most effort is being focused on Mozilla 2) Well, somebody will pick it up. I'm less excited about Chrome as I am about the innovation and progress it represents (and I guess Chrome). I mean, this was a huge leap in browser technology, am I wrong? It is faster. The isolated processes are more stable. Whether the browser itself is stable or whether it's ugly or not doesn't m...

This is one of the reasons why xkcd is my favorite webcomic. It has an uncanny ability to mirror my daily thoughts.

I should make a collection of "xkcd reads my mind!" comics. That'd be neat.

And yeah, pretty much everybody says this about xkcd, so I guess it's not special.

Re: Derivative of ln function

Yeah, I got the chain rule, and I was applying it to the inside (x2-1) but not the |x| function, which is where it all fell apart. I was just setting the "x" in ln(x) to |x|, which led me incorrectly to f'(x) = 1/|x|.

Re: Derivative of ln function

If you take the derivative of ln|-6|, you get 1/|-6|, not 1/-6. They're completely different answers. The derivative of a constant is 0 actually ;) But no, the derivative of ln(|x|) is 1/x, not 1/|x|. Take a look at the graph of ln(|x|), it looks like a curvy "V" with the bottom of the &q...

Re: Derivative of ln function

They aren't both correct though, because your answer is incorrect between -1 and 1 (it has the wrong sign in that interval). Let's try some simpler examples to see why this is: if the question gave you ln(|x|), what would you say the derivative is if it gave you the options 1/|x| or 1/x? You'd say ...
