Re: Trump presidency

Sure, but people are largely moving because of other larger conflicts (e.g. drug laws, economic distress), and the massive shifts in property prices is partly due to an unwillingness to build houses if it will result in less expensive housing as well as the profit motive leading to more rental vaca...

Re: Trump presidency

It appears that, regardless of where they grew up, a great many people prefer to live in areas of pleasant weather, on the coast, with nice scenery. So folks would generally prefer to live in the nicer parts of California than a swamp in the midwest. It isn't just a pointless nitpick. Human beings b...

Crime in general is taken a lot more seriously for the "important people", sure.

Unfortunately, there are fairly few of those.

Re: Police misbehavior thread

Okay, yes, I was exaggerating for effect. But there seems to be an assumption here that the crook will be waiting at home for the police to arrive and snap him up. It'll go more like this: when the officer arrives at the location, he will find an empty room. The room will have been rented in cash, ...

(And this is also why it sounds funny when Americans claim they will massively move to Canada if unhappy about whatever; I suspect Canada wouldn't welcome them, and while it's easy to go somewhere as a tourist, it is much harder to get a job and a home as a foreigner). Re: 2018 Midterm Elections Coverage

Seems reasonable enough. WV has supported Manchin for ages. Manchin is almost certainly going to hold his senate seat. He's a fixture 'round there. They've been tradition "red" for presidential purposes, but the state as a whole is kinda purple depending on how you look at it. I don't have...

You've got to go through border controls to get to Canada from the US. Well, barring way off in the woods, because hey, nobody's gonna bother with all that. And there are still restrictions on immigration and stuff. There's a bit of a difference between immigrating and visiting, I suppose, but it's ...

I thought the drivers were all 1099 employees? Never worked for Amazon, but yeah, 1099 folks in general end up with some awkwardness. Gotta sort out your own healthcare, taxation deductions change, generally a lack of bennies. It's not so bad if the pay is high enough to compensate, but as you say, ...

Re: Trump presidency

The delay to process requests is a different sort of backlog, but still relevant. It's comparatively small, though. A quarter million is a fraction of the yearly deportations. Now, yes, we probably should process these in a more expedited fashion because a 23 year waiting list is dumb, but doing so ...

Oh, they're not even increasing everyone to $15. The aforementioned 1099 workers? Not included. They receive no wage increase at all, even if below the $15 bar. In the same announcement, mind you, Amazon said it was going to lobby the government to increase the minimum wage overall. End of the day, ...

I'm pretty sure that all of the existing immigrant population is already absorbed into the economy and a sudden drastic reduction in that would also be a shock to the system. We're actually deporting fewer people right now than in the fairly recent past, so we're not really reducing our existing im...

When we talk of letting everyone in, we mean letting in everyone who wants to get in. But that is a much smaller number and I don't think you have any more idea of what it is than anyone else so how do you know that it is a problem? That's fairly easy. We can look at the existing illegal immigrant ...

The origin of this particular comparison was in opposition to the idea that borders ought not exist. It's not really a strawman if that's explicitly what folks have been arguing.
