Re: Jet fuselage liberates self at 29000 feet; passengers worry

Apparently Qantas were refusing to let passengers retrieve their luggage for some time - it's rumoured that something in the luggage may have exploded and made the hole, rather than a problem with the plane itself. That said, this isn't exactly the first time bits have fallen off a Qantas plane whil...

Re: Drinking age in Scotland (and perhaps Britain) to be raised?

I don't think increasing the age limit is going to do anything to prevent binge drinking, given that every adolescent boy and his dog already drinks while underage and half the people selling booze don't care about age restrictions anyway. People need to be taught to drink responsibly, rather than d...

Re: WYD SYD 2008

Well, governments spend plenty of money on non-religious events, too - the Victorian government, for example, spends millions to prop up the Grand Prix. I don't think the separation of church and state means that the government must refuse to touch anything associated with religion; rather that they...

Re: Worst/Overrated books.

All the later Wheel of Time books, except for the eleventh. After the fourth book, they got progressively worse. The tenth has literally zero plot advancement. You could just jump from from the ninth to the eleventh without noticing anything missing.

Re: WYD SYD 2008

I'm pretty sure everyone involved in the tourism industry would say that it's completely worth the price, particularly around Sydney. It got good media attention and also brought people into the country by the hundred. People who will tell everyone that Australia is awesome, and who may well want to...

Re: Best and Worst Discworld

Yeah, I'd agree with that. To be honest, I think even Pratchett agrees - in The Art of Discworld he says that "Rincewind's job is to meet more interesting people. Readers still ask for more stories about him, but there's a limited amount you can do with a character who is a coward and doesn't c...

Re: Profiling at airports

I just don't understand what makes airplanes and flight so special that some amount of people want or think they need this much security. Ah, see, that's because the September 11 attack involved planes. If it had involved chickens, all chicken farms would be protected by SWAT teams or something. Pe...

Re: What difficulty player are you?

I usually start on the middle difficulty and end on the hardest, unless the hardest is just tedious or frustrating ("Hey, let's give all the enemies fourteen times as much health! That will make the game so much more exciting because the player will get to repeat the same attack pattern over an...

Re: Best and Worst Discworld

I just don't like Rincewind, especially his "Something horrible is going to happen to me. I just KNOW it." attitude. Suck it up. Not to mention the fact that not only is he a coward and proud of it, he can be a jerk sometimes. That's kind of the point of Rincewind. Overly-muscled heroes w...

I never use bookmarks or other marking mechanisms, nor do I memorise page numbers. I just flip around until I recognise the page I was reading. The fact that I can do so seems to mystify some people...

I read the entire Bible years ago. These days, I only use it as a reference when theological debate arises.

Re: Dice probability problem

Hmmm... You'd want to start by looking at some limits. Firstly, if the dice are fair, the chance should be around 50% when X = Y. I say around because there's a chance that they're equal. The exact chance depends on the number of dice, I believe. Secondly, there's a point where the chance of one bei...

Re: Profiling at airports

I don't think this kind of profiling is a useful measure unless nobody is aware that you're doing it (which is clearly not the case). It's just so easy to circumvent measures which rely on physical appearance or clothing. Now, I've seen comments that the terrorists won't be able to send someone who ...

Re: Creationism

I present the most foolish argument by creationists to date! The misunderstood, misinformed, Peanut Butter argument, based on the thinking outlined two posts ago! The worst I've seen is the argument that, if the Big Bang had occurred, everything in the universe would spin in the same direction. It ...
