Re: Male and female ability differences down to socializatio

We've been industrialized since say the 1840s--evolutionary impact doesn't run over such a short span of time. There are still wars, still places where aggression can be useful.

Re: Male and female ability differences down to socializatio

Depends on the species and the trajectory evolution takes:

Could make it easier to mate successfully/get rid of competitors. Could make getting resources easier.

Re: Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality

Some of it was funny, lots of it was simply completely out of character and not like any 11 year old I've ever met.

It also seems like Quirrell is some strange amalgam of himself and Alastor Moody's doppelganger. I suppose this is meant to speed up the series some.

Re: Male and female ability differences down to socializatio

I'm not pretending that is the only cause of male aggression--but statistics on crime for violent assault do demonstrate a trend for male aggression. Most of that can potentially be cultural/social or even police discrimination. And you're correct--I don't know very much about testosterone except fo...

Re: Smoking Bans, how do they (and should they) work?

As has already been said in this thread: 1. If businesses aren't legislated no-smoking, all will end up smoking because non-smokers will end up tagging along with smokers more often than not. Once the ban is in place and NO establishment can have indoor smoking, no business is lost for anyone in the...

Re: Male and female ability differences down to socializatio

However, testosterone is linked to increased aggression--and men have more testosterone. So while it isn't fair to say all men are more aggressive than all women: on average men are usually more aggressive due to biology. Even though we're essentially working with a scatter-graph of people who fall ...

But at this point we're grasping at straws about it. There is some biological factor in male and female brains (how much is uncertain--particularly since children are 'gendered' by society so early--they're receiving messages so fast it's hard to say which attributes could be biological and which at...

Yes, I agree--that's precisely how it's turned out in Toronto, people griped about it in the first year and got used to it thereafter. It's well and good to tell the establishments to choose one or the other--but unless legislated it's commercial suicide for any pub/bar/club. Once legislated they lo...

See because women have two x chromosomes--so recessive traits carried in one of these are less likely to appear in women than in men who only have one x. I sometimes do that if my back hurts of if my breasts need re-adjusting in the bra. I realize crossed arms is often defensive but it's also pretty comfortable for me. I've never crossed my arms under my breasts in order to flirt.

Someone who works in mining/roofing or construction wears protective equipment and is trained--the aspect of danger is directly related to the job they need to do: Putting shingles on a roof (high up place) has a risk of falling for instance.
