Re: Starting Discworld?

You can pretty much start anywhere, the books are pretty loosely connected. That said, like Nath, I started at The Colour of Magic, and I see no reason why you wouldn't either. If you can choose where to begin anyway, why not do so at the first book?

Always approach the store you got it from. You have an agreement with them, not with the manufacturer.

Yes, there's a big difference between 4830, 4850, 4870 and 4870X2, even though the numbers are very similar.

Re: Computer build

I see no reason why an AMD motherboard would somehow require or work better with an ATI video card, so I'm going to play the 'bollocks' card on that statement. I would still not recommend going with the 9600 though. Both the GeForce 8800 GT and the Radeon 4830 perform better than the 9600, for a sim...

The xxx-bit bit (sorry) refers to the memory bandwidth. Read more here.

It has nothing to do with your processor architecture, so your 32 bit processor will work fine with it.

Re: Global Warming or Global Cooling?

Your threshold for accuracy and universality in global temperature measure is amusingly small. Truly global climate measure began in April of 1960 with the launch of TIROS-1, the first successful weather satellite. TIROS-1 was capable of determining temperature over much of the earth's surface with...

No, there is no way to multi quote a post. Cut and paste is the way to go. When firefox displays the "Image" text, it does this because the image cannot be loaded. When you right click on the text, you'll get the normal pop-up menu for images: http://www.google.com/image.jpg

The first is the statistical accuracy of current climate models and measures, espescially as they are frequently combined with models and measures from as long as two or three hundred years ago to create the current warming trend. Back then, temperature was measured haphazardly with mercury thermom...

The Second is 'would the climate predicted by global warming really be so bad?' As Pez Dispens3r pointed out, global warming models only really predict an increase in sea level and tropical climates that extend farther towards the poles. This means that much of the area currently used for farming m...

"Global warming" is a misnomer. Global climate change is a much better term. If your confusion stems only from the use of the phrase "global warming", then I'd say there isn't much to worry about.

I don't think it's worth upgrading just your CPU in (say) 2 years time. It'll likely only be marginally faster than what is on the market now, and significantly slower than what's on the market for newer sockets in 2 years.

In computer networking, a DMZ is a part of the network that exposes itself to the Internet (or any other untrusted network), which can be used to host all kinds of servers. When an intruder hacks into the DMZ, the rest of the network is still protected. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/...

There can be lots of reasons why windows refuses to boot. If it's a problem with the data on the disk, then simply attach it as a secondary drive to another computer and copy it. If the disk itself is corrupted, you're fucked, most likely.
