Please, no discussions about whether backwards-R is a vowel, or a diphthong, etc... Happy to oblige ;-) "backwards-R", being Cyrillic Я, is clearly a vowel. Or a diphthong. I'm not sure. We have 6 vowels, and neither Ю nor Я were among them at the time. The sounds are like "yu" ...
