Re: Balls and bags.

There's really only a slight difference, but it does indeed change the probabilities: Two ways of looking at it, first is to consider the relationship of the balls and fulfilment of his statements. Basically, when they're in his hand they don't have a separate identity; this is the same as t...

Re: Balls and bags.

Re: Nix, if you assume he meant only 1 ball is white, then the puzzle becomes inconsequential.
then tells you that at least one of the balls is white.

That's the exact wording; that of the two balls, either one is white, or two is white. I hardly see how this is ambiguous.

Re: 2 + 2 = 5

there's a good proof for 0=1 by integrating by parts:

(let F(x,y) mean taking the integral from x to y)

F()1/x = lnx
F()1/x = x/x - F()x*-1/x^2 = 1+F()1/x = 1+lnx
lnx=1+lnx, therefore 1=0.
From whence, 2+2=5, not four, and freedom is inconsequential.

Re: Best song lyrics.

Yeah I think that was kind of the point... Those lyrics are pretty poetic though evilbob.

But please no lyric dumping; discussion thread plx.
Edit: sorry, lyric pasting is cool, but actually talk about the lyrics and why they're amazing/awesome/the metaphorical bomb.

Best song lyrics.

Well, we have a worst song lyrics topic, so I figured I'd counter that. Not necessarily the song itself, but what song do you think has lyrics that are just absolutely brilliant? Personally I'd have to start the ball rolling with Lateralus by Tool. I'm sure the gimmick is known by every avid Tool fa...

Re: Modern "Prog-Rock"?

I've seen mention of enough bands for me to shove Ayreon into the mix. it's progressive rock opera - and has guested lead singers from opeth, pain of salvation, dream theater, katatonia, hell even iron maiden. Also, people seem to not have mentioned Pain of Salvation here... kind of borderline betwe...

Re: Favorite Song

I think i'd have to distinguish between favourite song and song that I just damn well respect. Overall, I'd have to say that The Great Gig in the Sky by Floyd is the best damn musical piece written. Ever. However, Due to many years of overlistening, it wouldn't be my first pick, and honestly my favo...

Oh dear god where to begin... Possibly the most amazing song and band I have ever heard is The Dead Flag Blues by Godspeed You! Black Emperor.it's avont-garde post-rock and it is amazing. Some more post-rock goodness... pretty sure plenty of peeps know them but i'll chuck them up here anyway; Explos...

dear god I need to start doing C again... took me far too long to figure out what was going on with that code // only these cases match our observations, assuming he always tells the color of his first ball The point is that he doesn't tell us the colour of the first ball, he simply tells us tha...

Re: Balls and bags.

Hold back there Nix; How are you distinguishing between Ww and wW, yet not allowing him to drop bW but only allowing him to drop Bw. I can guarantee that although there might be an argument for a 1/3 case, there's no way I can see that finding a ball to be white would influence the other balls&#...

Re: Balls and bags.

Honestly, the manner of the choosing of the balls doesn't matter; either way we get the information that there are 2 balls, both with a 50% chance of being black or white, but at least one of them is white. It works just as well if he tells you 'at least one is black', or if he pulls balls out until...

Re: h vs. hbar

You're kidding me, right? Rotational systems and equations are made to simplify linear descriptions of such which are more complex. In the same way, hbar was made to remove unnecessary terms that appear constantly in the many rotational quantum systems. It has it's uses for sure, don't get me wrong,...

Re: Balls and bags.

Here's the reasoning behind it: The answer is 1/2 as people are guessing. The key to the question is that the ball is accidentally dropped. This means that we can define out of WW, BW, and WB that the first ball was dropped, which eliminates the BW possibility. Or to put it another way, if he had BW...

Re: Five Towers

I guess it's best to think of the numbers as 30 soldiers or units which you get to divide up in 5 groups. First thoughts: It's impossible to win all 5 towers (obviously); thus a good part of any strategy would be to give up any towers where your strength is much less then the enemies. For this reaso...

Re: Balls and bags.

Good argument Puck, did you see the second question I posted?
Also, if he pulls out a ball in each hand, says one must be white then shows you the ball in his left hand to be white, what is the chance of the other being white?

Might leave this for a bit of discussion before I wave my 2 cents in.

Thanks for the spoilers JR; I'm 99% sure you've jumped onto the same solution I did. Here's a hint for people still stuck (probably a rewording of previous hints): You're trying to find A princess which isn't the middle princess. Not whether the princess you question is the middle princess. ...

Haven't seen the child gender problem, but I'd guess it would be the same. This is just the way I heard it. Balls and bags.

A friend pulls 2 balls out of a bag containing equal amounts of white and black balls, then tells you that at least one of the balls is white. He then accidentally drops one, which indeed, is white. What is the chance that the second ball is white, and why? (There are two seemingly possible solution...
