Re: Ebola thread

I read this as "he's been charged for lying, but if he was lying I'm sympathetic. If he wasn't lying, by god he deserves what's coming to him"! I know that's not what you said, but I still found it funny. You should have read it as 'If he was afraid for his life, and fleeing to the US in ...

Re: Ebola thread

What's interesting is he didn't just lie about the questionaire, but the contact he had with sick people. I'm curious to hear from him what the deal was. If he was fleeing in fear, or hoping to get to America for better treatment, I can sort of sympathize. If he was just being willfully negligent, ...

Re: Civilian-enforced traffic laws

If this were a thing, I'd have lost my licence years ago. This whole concept makes me really uncomfortable. I'm pretty paranoid, so the idea that everyone might be watching me and waiting for me to make a mistake would stress me out (and probably cause me to drive even worse than I usually do). I'm ...

Re: Mental support for pedophiles

Mental support sounds like a good idea. Anything that might prevent pain and suffering in victims is a good idea (except for all the examples I thought up as soon as I wrote that sentence). We had this discussion a while back, regarding whether or not psychiatrists should be required to disclose to ...

I'm fine with this. Provided there's no power imbalance (which is the problem with parent/child incest and adult/child relationships), people should be able to be with who they want. And I also wonder about the ethics of banning something because of possible birth defects in children. I don't think ...

The word aide exists. It's a person who assists another (or gives them aid). CU's use was certainly just a mistake and not part of a grand conspiracy to make aid sound like a bad thing.

Re: The Darker Side of the News

Australia uses deaths at sea as justification for treating asylum seekers abysmally. Because if we treated them humanely, that would only encourage them to keep coming of course. Not that we care about what happens to them when they're not on a boat heading towards us. They can die in large numbers ...

Re: Scottish Independence

I think a simple majority works. It would be nice if it were more decisive, but as others have said requiring 60% or 70% would very likely lead to a scenario where the majority want independence but can't get it. I'd say Westminster is commonly used to describe the UK government. Much more common th...

Well, that's likely because of the question. Does Scotland want to be ruled by Westminster? Which is the way that you, and no one else in this thread, formulates it. I mean, why not say "London"? I'd say Westminster is commonly used to describe the UK government. Much more common than Lon...
