maybe the script is being run with PATH set to something that doesn't include the directory python is in... what happens if you change the hashbang to point directly to the python binary? Same thing happens when its set to /usr/bin/env python. The script executes fine from bash using both /usr/bin/...

Erm, why would that be an issue, exactly? If it got played while another was in the stack, everything would happen again, yes, but it'd have no target -- nothing on the field, nothing in either player's hand.
