Re: Project Euler

Increasingly offtopic, so spoilered. This is poor interface design, as explained in chapter 2 (page 8-23) of this paper . For some reason it does seem to be a common pattern in Java, though. The paper is about C++ so not everything in that chapter is relevant for you, but it still highlights...

I don't like "octopodes", because it sounds too similar to "octopods". Only if you pronounce it wrong (as I did for years, before I was shown this video )... as discussed upthread, it's a Greek word, the E isn't silent. The woman in that video clip pronounces it wrong, too. If y...

Sorry for starting a quote pyramid, just trying to help... :) IDE's are useful, but tend to be a bit heavy for when you're starting out - when you're learning the basics, you largely just want "source file -> compiler -> executable", not "solution + projects -> build...". Could y...

Yesterday we stole the demon man's coins, despite him having seen it, and put them in our pockets.

Are we doing at least 21 words instead of at least 18 words? Should I change that in the OP? (I didn't adhere to that new rule here.)

Re: Can every debt be paid off?

I think I see what you mean. But isn't this just basically the same thing, from a more optimistic perspective? I mean, the way I understand your analogy, the only way all debts could be cleared is if all banks give up on having profit. In reality, for obvious reasons, banks do what they can to keep ...

I'm late to the discussion, but I believe I might still have something to add here. Our financial system is, in a sense, so perverse that it's hard to believe. A large volume of water in zero g would be quite scary, because the water will stick to your skin. See this youtube video with Chris Hadfield.

Yes, allocators are treated too much like a black box in the standard. Alex Stepanov has written about that too. Diadem: as an alternative to using pointers instead of references or switching to a better compiler (which I understand is not an option), you could also reach for third-party container i...

Re: Producing data for people who expect SPSS compatibility

By "value-label mapping", do you mean the thing where you have a factor variable (e.g. high treatment vs. low treatment vs. control) and the levels of the factor are encoded with arbitrary integer values (e.g. 2 for high, 1 for low and 0 for control), so you need a mapping between the inte...

tarring with .rsync-filters to backup w/o intermediate copy

Dear fellow xkcdians, I'm looking for a way to selective backup files from my home folder into an archive, using .rsync-filter files sprinkled throughout the directory. I currently have a way to do this, but it requires an intermediate copy which makes the entire procedure at least two times slower ...

Re: Coding: Fleeting Thoughts

As a programmer who lives in central London, I can give you a pretty good idea of what you should expect? I'd expect a junior programmer to be on 25-30, mid level 35 - 45, senior 50+. All in £1000s. Wow, I'm a little surprised that salaries for programmers are so much lower in the UK than the US. P...
