If for n-1 we have that

1 + 2 + 3 + ... + n-1 = (n-1)(n)/2 = (n^2 -n)/2

Then

1 + 2 + 3 + ... + n = (n^2 -n)/2 + n = (n^2 -n + 2n)/2 = (n^2 + n)/2 = n(n+1)/2

I've definitely seen a number of identities where (n-1) implies n is cleaner. Almost anything that involves both n and (n+1) will be cleaner if you start with n-1 and go to n.
