1619: Watson Medical Algorithm

http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/watson_medical_algorithm.png Title text: "Due to a minor glitch, 'discharge patient' does not cause the algorithm to exit, but instead leads back to 'hunt down and capture patient'." Well, I laughed enough to feel it deep in my lungs. Thanks for the cardiovascu...

Re: 1582: "Picture a Grassy Field"

Huh. That's sort of reminiscent of St. Anselm. To define an imaginary thing that imaginarily is powerful enough to transcend being an imaginary thing.

That is on a different graph, which also has points with her footprints facing opposite yours, and big marks in the sand from where she stood in front of you and pushed you back.

Re: 1521: “Sword in the Stone”

As I understand it, in Roman times, Britannia was the populated and civilised (well, Romanised anyway) southern end. The painted savages in the north were Caledonia.

Also, there were several monarchs between James I & VI and Queen Anne.

Re: 1520: Degree-Off

Rather than spreading discredited fables (Malthus never bothered with facts), some of us are busting our asses to push towards improvement as fast as we can. Fewer children die every day of famine and war, but thousands still do, and even one is too many. Malthus didn't actually need a lot of empir...

Re: What-If 134: "Space Burial"

I study this stuff because I am designing a new kind of "solid-state" satellite swarm . Lower orbits, not geostationary, but long term stability imposes constraints on orbits and operation. You're cooling space-based computers by radiation? OK, I mean, you don't have a choice. You...

Re: 1503: "Squirrel Plan"

I just recently read somewhere that squirrels are opportunistic omnivores, which seems to explain some of their behaviour.

(It might have been something written by Ryan North and Erica Henderson.)

The Voynich Manuscript is in the lower left quadrant? Clearly neither of the middle lines is zero, because that is definitely >0 weird and >0 unclear. And what, exactly, does 0 weirdness or 0 clarity mean? Well, it's a question of correspondence to independent natural or cultural parallels.... This...

(I also recently finally got the joke in "I Want A New Duck", where he wants a duck who'll "show me how to get down". He even repeats "how to get down" and shouts "GET IT!?" and I never got it until a few months ago. Down. Like, feather down. He wants a duck ...

SMFW is So Much F***in' Win . Some may not know that or use it, but it doesn't not make sense in any fashion. This is just one of the swing-and-a-miss days. This comment is So Much F^<<ing Win. I agree (though it admittedly only occurred to me when I was looking at the site again on Friday).

Can I spoof video for Google Hangout?

Is there a way to join a Google Hangout without being actually, you know, seen or heard? Sort of eavesdrop, I guess. I could just tape something over the webcam, I guess. But I'd like to be able to put up a false image too, or even a feed from some other video source. Is this doable, and what does i...
