Re: Parlons Français ! [French practice]

Re: tlhIngan Hol yIjatlh! (Klingon Practise)

Yay, this thread lives once more! saSop yintaHqu' ej' saSopHa' (I will eat you all alive and regurgitate you) Should be "SaSop yIntaHqu' 'ej SaSopHa'", and even then, "SaSop yIntaHqu'" doesn't really make any sense. You probably want some kind of "while" clause instead....

Re: Portal Physics

Here's my reasoning about the Portal gravity problem: One of the most important postulates of the 20th century was that of the local equivalence of "gravitational force" experienced by an earthbound observer and the inertial force experienced by somebody standing on a platform that's accel...

Re: When they say jump, you say...?

It's from Fullmetal Jacket isn't it? Don't know, but I found an interesting blog post that would seem to corroborate that: [Link] He got that result from searching, though, so he might have gotten it wrong. A fair bit of searching on my part suggests Hartman never actually said this. However, IMDb ...

Re: When they say jump, you say...?

Pardon if I am being dense, I have trouble with the phrase "when they say jump, you say how high." Does anyone know of the history of this one? I have tried searching the webs and wordorigins.org, phrases.org.uk, etc. to no avail... When I hear this phrase used it seems to be in the conte...

Re: tlhIngan Hol yIjatlh! (Klingon Practise)

Regarding a good site for Klingon: You can learn quite a lot by starting off reading Wikipedia's article on the language, and then moving on to the resources at http://klingonska.org/. Start constructing simple sentences, and then start looking for conversations in Klingon online to see how more exp...

Re: New value of pi?

Hope to find the time to check this out more closely. I have no doubt he's wrong, as measurements would have picked up on such a large error long ago, not to mention numerical calculations that simply approximate circles using finer and finer polygons... ...but it could possibly be quite fun to prov...

Re: Honor Societies

The accepted interpretation of "If x join this group, p will happen" is "If this group's member count exceeds x, then p will happen. p will not precede the first time this group's member count exceeds x. If this group's member count never exceeds x, then p will never happen." Fa...

Re: Honor Societies

I don't know if anyone has spotted this but... "If 1,000,000 people join this group, it will have 1,000,000 people in it." Is not a tautology! Because people can leave the group after joining it. So a million people can join the group and it might not have a million people in it. That's n...

Re: Honor Societies

Kind of a "Get out of my head, Randall!"-moment for me: A while back, I joined the Facebook page "I bet this shite insect can get more fans than Nick Griffin". I don't really like making political statements on Facebook, but I found the page's description rather amusing. A while ...

Re: "G-Spot" Discussion

I once got an e-mail reporting that "with bigger dick you can pleasure HIDDEN SECRET SPOTS INSIDE FEMALE VAGINA!" My conclusion is that there is a G-spot, but most women are in on the plot to keep it secret! Also, because size apparently matters in pleasuring these HIDDEN SECRET SPOTS INSI...

Re: "Revolutionary" Discussion

Ah, now here's a comic I can relate to! People like this abound on the internet where I live, and often it puts you in rather an uncomfortable position: On the one hand, you don't want to present physics as being based on appeal to authority, but on the other, you find yourself getting quite annoyed...

As a student of Engineering Physics, I approve of this comic! However, before I considered this, my first thought was that the physicist could use the laptop to get towards the door. Just grab the laptop and fling it directly away from the door ... Of course, you wouldn't be able to grasp the laptop...

No references in the comic to 666? :( Actually, when I read this comic, I asked myself "Is it all a coincidence that comic #666 is about emulating a poltergeist?" Even though today's comic has the number 666 wendsdays will truly be the 666'th comic because there was never actually a comic...

Re: "Sympathy" Discussion

Has anyone asked yet how having one information in two different places at one moment in time, could possibly make any other information go back in time? What i mean - yes, it's creating a paradox of two identical sources of information, but how could this send some information back in time? It's l...

The problem is that in order for this to work, you'd have to have gotten the brothers into the right inertial frames even before the first brother died in order to save him, whether these "instants" lie orthogonal to the dying brother's world line or to the living ones'. Now, the more brot...

Re: "Lego" Discussion

I must say, I am quite surprised that some people are interpreting this as a religious or political message. I mean, if I really try, then I can kind of see the resemblance between this comic and political ads where a friend encourages a friend to do what is "right", so I guess I can see h...
