Re: Today I Made:

Friday night I made fresh pasta and tomato sauce which turned out good, but the sauce was still a but watery after more than an hour of bubbling. I d disk true to make my first ever jam! We had tons of peaches and I used PAstrychef's suggestion for the Ball book. Unfortunately I didn't get enough pe...

Re: Controversial opinions about food

Buffalo sauce seems like something I would enjoy, but it basically never is, on the few occasions I've tried it. Personally I'm a fan of (good) mayo. It's become a weirdly divisive racial thing here (a shitty article recently called it "identity condiments") but I'm convinced most of it st...

It's one of those recipes that ends up being greater than the sum of the parts; don't be put off by the seemingly uninspiring ingredients list. That looks great, I should get on it soon. Well, maybe after we go through the cheesecake I made and some of our ridiculous amount of peaches (some of whic...

Re: Food fleeting thoughts

Today I learned: my curried pumpkin soup definitely gets spicier when I let it sit in the fridge. I've never understood how this is possible. Sounds delicious though. I don't know if there's any other science going on, but temperature really impacts how much we perceive flavors. So a fresh (and ver...

The official first dish I made in my new oven: Malva pudding for dessert at a braai on the weekend. Traditional South African baked pudding, soaked in a buttery sugary syrup/sauce as soon as it comes out of the oven. Slightly creamy, slightly caramelly, comforting and heavenly. Oh, so a British-sty...

Lots of cooking yesterday! I made omelettes with beet greens, onions and cheddar, and some quick flatbread to go with them for brunch. Then I used up potatoes and squash in a version of this recipe, then I made the base for a cheesecake which I'll only bake today.

We've been getting some great cucumbers and a couple of acorn squashes (and more on the way). Also our first zucchini! The tomatoes don't look ripe yet, but maybe soon.

We've been getting loads of beets from our CSA and we'll have to figure out what to do with those.

Voyager was OK and had some great pieces to it. I didn't really bother with Enterprise. Discovery, as I've discussed elsewhere, hasn't been the best, but I hope it gets better.
