Re: Israel/Palestine discussion

While I have an opinion on the matter which I will not bring up at this moment, I can tell you that all (or most) of you have a very strong opinion on one of the sides. Both sourmilk And JonScholar are posting quotes from either side, and there are millions of other examples from both sides. Every t...

Re: 0884: "Rogers St."

Somewhat on topic (and I'm sorry in advance if I should've asked it somewhere else) - why is it when i go to xkcd.com I see the current (Rogers St.) comic, but www.xkcd.com leads to Friday's "Pain" comic?

You mean that after the First Intifada started Israel didn't let convicted or suspected terrorists cross into Israel? How dare they!

Re: Israel/Palestine discussion

The Palestinians do have a right to self-defense. They haven't needed to defend themselves: when Israel stopped occupying Gaza, they responded with rockets. When Israel defended itself, Hamas chose to continue with the aggression, despite the fact that that's exactly the wrong thing to do. As for t...

Re: Israel/Palestine discussion

While we're on the topic, http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4053837,00.html Israel intercepts the first short-range missile (ever?) Hell yeah. Let's see how well that works: it's possible that, depending on how well the system works and how autonomous it is, Israel can sit back and let Hama...

Re: New York area meetup??

I work in NYC so I know the area quite well. While I live outside of the city (Jersey) and would unlikely be able to host anyone, shoot me a message if you want suggestions on where to go (on whatever type of budget you've got) and what to see; I should be able to give a few pointers in the least.

Re: Israel/Palestine discussion

Palestinian is an ethnicity in some ways. There are divides in the Arab world along many lines, but the most relevant in this case are Egyptians and Bedouins compared to "other" Arabs in the region between them. Palestinian may be vague, but it does have some specific meaning beyond geogr...

Re: Egypt's New Government likely to be Hostile to Israel

In a poll conducted jointly by the Hebrew University and the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research 32% of the 1,270 Palestinians in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Jerusalem who were asked backed the terror attack last month that killed 5 members of a Jewish family in Itamar, including tw...

Re: Egypt's New Government likely to be Hostile to Israel

Saying, "we want a cease-fire" is a positive thing... Meh -- Hamas saying 'we want a cease-fire' is a positive thing only in that it mostly means the IDF has been effective enough to make Hamas feel like they can't (or shouldn't, for damage control,) keep fighting at the moment. I wouldn'...

Re: Egypt's New Government likely to be Hostile to Israel

It means not taking measures to avoid civilian casualties that inhibit Israel's ability to effectively target Hamas. See, that's the thing. We have an ethical obligation to minimize civilian casualties. And you think that encouraging Hamas to use civilians as human shields is a good way to do this,...

Re: Egypt's New Government likely to be Hostile to Israel

I've been reading XKCD for a long while, and began spending some time on the forums recently, but this discussion actually convinced me to join the conversation. For starters, let me say that I am not as well versed as some of the people here in all things Israel / Hamas. I also may have a somewhat ...
