[Fixed] What-If Feed Problems

Postby NeatNit » Fri Jul 26, 2013 9:27 am UTC

Fixed

If you take a look here: http://what-if.xkcd.com/feed.atom (link to this can be found at the bottom of any what-if page, called FEED)
and scroll down a bit to find this:

Code: Select all

Drain the Oceans: Part II

Drain the Oceans: Part II

(or the similar header for any post which isn't the very latest)
Note the second line:

My RSS reader isn't something like google reader and when I click the button to go to the post it follows the link URL, not the title's href (which points to the correct location). For anyone interested, I use the default RSS reader app built into the G15 keyboard LCD screen software. In other words, it supports nothing fancy and only shows me the title of the post with one of the buttons opening the browser to that link. What more can you expect from a monochrome screen :)

Could this be fixed please?

Even worse, since the
is the same for all entries, most RSS readers will ignore all but the first one assuming that they are different versions of the same entry.

Code: Select all

feed problems for What-If in Feedly

Postby ebow » Tue Aug 06, 2013 4:54 pm UTC

For some reason, Feedly has some significant trouble with the RSS / Atom feed for What-If. Today, for example, it shows the current article (just posted today) as being 21 days old, and it was already marked as read despite me not reading it yet. It's done this kind of thing in previous weeks, too.

Is this just a Feedly problem? Just me? Or something with the feed itself? (I didn't notice any glaring errors when I glanced over the raw feed.)

edit to add: The main comic's feed works just fine, btw.

FWIW, I don't even *see* today's article in my Feedly feed, so... I'd say it's a Feedly bug. I've had such weird problems with it ever since I've started using it (including, for example, read articles suddenly being unread again, and similar), and for these few months since I've started using it, I'm thinking it'll never replace Google Reader, which was awesomely reliable. Anyway, it seems that the raw feed is okay, so it's not really an xkcd problem.

There is a problem with the feed, which I suspect is related: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=103815

Now that you mention it, I have had some other weird problems, like a whole lotta items in a feed suddenly unread again. I always chalked it up to those feeds being buggy, but maybe Feedly isn't the top-notch read I hoped it was.

Good point. I saw that one, but figured it wasn't related because each "article" in my view of the feed links directly to the correct post in What-If. It's just that the dates are very wrong, as is the read-unread status. Still, maybe it's a combination of a quirk in the feed + Feedly behaving badly.

Also broken in Tiny Tiny RSS reader. The problem appears to be that the entries all have the same id and link in the feed data, as mentioned in the linked post.

Code: Select all

Dropping a Mountain

...

Restraining an Airplane

...

Same problem here with what-if feed.
xkcd feed works fine, so I dont know if the mentioned id problem is relevant.

The
tags in the http://xkcd.com/atom.xml feed are unique as they should be.

Code: Select all

The problem remains that the whatif atom feed is using non-unique
tags.

So does anyone who can do something about it read this forum? From a quick look around I didn't notice a better place to report it.

This is a good place for technical problems with the site. When davean sees it, he'll act on it, I'm sure.

Still broken, for Live Bookmarks in Firefox too.

Ed.: I think I see another problem with the source too: There isn't actually a link to the relevant entry, so the reader won't know where to send you. All links go to the front page.

Clearly SOMEONE messed with this, but they certainly did not fix anything. The header as of now looks like:

Code: Select all

Restraining an Airplane

Restraining an Airplane

"//what-if.xkcd.com//what-if.xkcd.com/56/"? what? Technically this is already part of the article, not part of the feed data... But still, something in the backend has been changed, and quite definitely not for the better. Looks like a huge mess someone would need to untangle, hopefully fast.

Needs to be fixed:
line 3: should link to specific article, not to main page.
line 4: should be a unique ID
line 7: is that normal? I wouldn't know...
line 8: link is... well.. uhh... how do I even explain this one?!

Edit: Looking at my original post, apparently nothing has been changed. I simply had not noticed it earlier. In other words, this feed is broken in like 5 ways probably.

Perhaps davean needs more direct prodding (through PM)? Or perhaps he is on holiday. That would actually make sense.

The feed is not working in tt-rss either for what it's worth.

Seems to be fixed. My reader just popped all articles back up, and a quick look at the feed's "code" shows that everything is better now. Thank you, davean <anonymous hero>!
