Addition to the warning.

Postby DeLine » Sun Nov 11, 2007 7:50 pm UTC

i think that the little warning about language and mathematical content in the comics should have a little addition. i am a mac user and have no understanding of anything linux related so some jokes fall flat with me. i think other readers should be warned to avoid the shame and embarassment i experienced.

If you wish to avoid shame and embarrassment, a look at the Rules threads would be in order. They will tell you about things like posting in the Intro Thread and about making your posts in the correct boards. Moving this to Site/Forum Issues - Hammer

Linux doesn't work on Macs?

Not only does Linux work on Macs (I've done it before, though I nuked the native install in favor of Parallels), most "Linux" stuff in the comic is generalizable to all UNIX and Unix-like systems--and Leopard is an honest-to-The Open Group branded UNIX(tm). Therefore, the "Linux" stuff applies to you too. Just open a terminal. Saying that you don't understand the Unix stuff because you run a Mac, therefore, is admitting to (at the very least) ignorance, if not outright stupidity.

Okay, so the X Window System is still OS X's bastard child, but it is there if you want it. I might consider installing KDE4 on it when it releases, then finding some kind of desktop manager that will choose between X11 and the Cocca-based system that OS X usually uses.
While I clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning,

"'Tis not possible!" I uttered, "Give me back my free hardcore!"

Got elitism? Seriously, everyone I know who owns a Mac, owns one precisely because it's simple to use and they don't HAVE to learn anything command-line-related. OS X is based on an exceedingly powerful base and the option to get neck-deep in obscure text commands is there if you want it, but considering OS X is designed so that one can do pretty much everything without ever even knowing the terminal exists, calling someone stupid because they aren't experienced with it is..well, stupid.
