OhNoRobot transcribing

Postby Phentos » Mon Dec 10, 2007 4:35 pm UTC

According to OhNoRobot, comics listed as needing transcribing (which is what enables the OhNoRobot search, for those that aren't familiar) are purported to have a transcribe this or something similar on the page. They don't, or my years of CRT use has reduced my eyeballs to sludge.

So, either 1) where is the link? or 2) can it be arranged for there to be placed a link?

He's not asking how to search the comics, he's asking how he can submit his own transcription of a comic that isn't yet transcribed. At least, that's how I understood it.

(And I don't know how.)

Wow, I didn't get that at all.

In that case, my extremely limited GIMP-fu will no have no use for you.

davean, can we get a "Transcribe this!" button, or how does it currently work?

There is a "Transcribe this" button... it's just invisible.

The way it works, is that the link's an image form the ohnorobot site, which redirects to a blank 1x1 image (thus hiding the link) if it's been transcribed already (or they don't want you to transcribe it for whatever reason... they're under load or something maybe), and to an image on xkcd's server if it needs transcribing (which presumably would say something like "Click here to transcribe me!").

Unfortunately, the image on xkcd's server is 404, and has been for a while... so it's invisible either way. If I could get it to actually send me to the xkcd image I'd get the URL, but maybe they're not after transcripts at the moment, so it's not sending me there, even if I ask for a strip I know isn't transcribed.

For those who simply must get their transcribing done, this link will head to the transcription page for today's comic... I'm sure the nerdy ones can figure out how to change it to work for other strips too... it's not that hard.

what exactly is the point or advantage of this versus actually seeing and reading the comic?

You can't do a text-based search of .png content?
Unless stated otherwise, I do not care whether a statement, by itself, constitutes a persuasive political argument. I care whether it's true.

First off, the transcriptions are great. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that there is already a ton of time put into making all of them, but it would be awesome if a way to transcribe more would appear. On the OhNoRobot site it says that no comics need transcribing, but the last comic to be transcribed was 368 (as of writing this, there are 375 comics). Also, I made a program to download all of the transcriptions, and I noticed there were quite a few missing in random places before 368. 56 to be exact. Here is my list of all of the comics that need transcribing:
    15,52,55,76,77,94,162,167,176,177,178,179,180,182,183,184,185,
    187,189,192,195,201,204,213,215,216,218,219,220,221,222,224,226,
    227,247,272,284,285,286,287,290,292,294,295,299,306,311,313,314,
    315,317,320,321,337,344,346
I would love to help with this, but I can't figure out how to easily get to the transcription pages.
Also, there are quite a few duplicate comic transcriptions. The Youtube comic (202) has been transcribed about 40 times.
I guess what I am asking is, what is the OhNoRobot.com support email address?

Just head to: http://www.ohnorobot.com/transcribe.pl?comicid=apKHvCCc66NMg&url=http:%2F%2Fxkcd.com%2F[comic number]%2F&title=[comic title]

I found the image URL I mentioned in my previous post, by the way... when you look at a comic that needs transcribing, it'll sometimes try to show an image from hereabouts... if TPTB put an image there, maybe we'll start getting more transcriptions.

Hey,
Just an update. I have been trying to get those last skipped comics transcribed, and quite a few have been done. For anyone wanting to join in the new list of missing comics is:
15,52,55,76,77,94,147,167,179,183,195,
204,213,216,224,247,272,287,294,295,

Y'know, I was looking for 368 just now, and for some reason it absolutely refuses to show up on OhNoRobot! (Try searching for "Bass" ! Or "Shirley" !)

Is OhNoRobot just flakey or something? (I see other threads deal with the duplication messiness.)

I was just able to add a transcription for 368, so maybe one had been submitted but was rejected for whatever reason.

There's still about half a dozen missing in Oh No Robot at the moment, as I discovered this week. I'm also impressed that it claims to have 1,300 strips when xkcd only has 507 strips...

Interestingly there is an Oh No Robot link from the bottom of the Archive page, pointing to transcribing http://www.xkcd.com/-2/

*cough-cough* Without wishing to sound too out of place, the search engine I maintain now, WordOwl, has each strip once and only once.

Are there any issues with approval of transcriptions? I've found that ohnorobot search does not work for lots of the latest comics. ohnorobot.com/transcribe.pl prints the following message for all strips since xkcd.com/581 (May 8, 2009):

There is already a transcription pending approval for this comic. Thanks for your interest - if the transcription is rejected, you'll be able to transcribe this comic in the future.

Look at the HTML source for the page containing an un-transcribed comic and you will find the handy URL for going to Oh No Robot transcription.

Alas, the comic I spent a long time clicking for also shows up with "transcription pending" (592 - one of my favorites). Since I doubt somebody *just* transcribed it, I suspect that there is an issue with the approval process.

At first I thought it might be because of R-rated content, but I did some other searching and found lots of R-rated stuff. What say ye, oh board admin?

Hello,

I see Oh No Robot have been removed
I am trying to add it on my website, it seems that oh no robot have trouble (mostly, he send me ignore.gif a one bit blank pixel instead of the "transcribe comic" image)
The forum is locked and the administrator did not reply to email (more than a week ago)

Does anyone have any news about this site, or know anything to replace it ? (I see word owl, but it is really not the same thing)
Everyone know I'm self-centered.
Well, at least I know it, it's enough.

There is some confusion regarding this issue. It popped up in relation to search problems in the archives, you can see the latest message about it here. I don't think it will be back up anytime soon and the people on the forum here are not related very much to the people who run the website.

I also hope you weren't asking xkcd about the ohnorobot site as... no one involved with xkcd anywhere has anything to do with ohnorobot and we'd not be able to help with anything at all regarding ohnorobot.

It should send a blank pixel when a transcription already exists.

Also, we're ditching OhNoRobot. If you want to test a replacement search, try the xkcd custom google search.
