Found a *major* bug in the site

Postby dr_pressure » Wed Sep 03, 2008 2:03 pm UTC

Whoever built the site made a fatal mistake: the random function can return 404, which leads the unsuspecting victim to:

http://xkcd.com/404

Randall really should fix that -- someone could get hurt or something.

Yeah, I should probably get back to work...

It's intentional.

Please see this thread: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=24564&p=742649&hilit=404#p742649

No, getting that result when you browse to comic #404 is intentional. The fact that the random function can take you there is a really minor oversight that doesn't really continue the joke.

Can we agree to disagree on this? I quite like the idea that the random function can take you there. Besides which, in that thread, Davean stated that the random access is intentional.

You know what would be cool? If xkcd had one of those fancy error pages, that has all the navigation links and the error message in the content area - then it could have a random button to allow navigation to continue.

In fact - you could even have previous and next buttons pointing to 403 and 405 (the joke could instead be accomplished by having _every_ 404 error point to comic #404, it otherwise being a legitimate comic)

Okay. You'll see I quoted you before you linked to the earlier thread anyway.
