Accessing XKCD at work

Postby Oorang » Mon Mar 22, 2010 11:11 pm UTC

I really enjoy XKCD, and it's not currently blocked at work. But if someone walks by when something is up on the screen like "Go-Go- Gadget-Two-Lesbians-Doing-It" I'm still going to have some 'splaining to do. The obvious solution here is to just not access XKCD from work, but I wonder if it would be possible to get a page like xkcd.com/workcheck where it will just tell you if current comic is NSFW.

I know it's a bit off-the-wall, but ya'll seem to like new ideas, so I thought I'd see if you were open to it:)

It would very much depend on your definition of NSFW.

Would the <x> girls <y> cup(s) comic count as NSFW? How about baby disassembly, sex density, porn...?

As has been covered, XKCD will be not safe for some work environments due to objectionable material. We will not police it for you. If it will be a problem, don't visit XKCD at work.

look at the forums and see whether the the title is SFW. Thats the best suggestion I can think of.

OP, do not follow that advice. There is no part of the fora that is entirely off limits for NSFW content. If you're worried about "two lesbians doing it" as a line in a comic strip, some of the thread titles around here would make your boss fire you and burn your house down. Just because there are no images of an adult nature, doesn't mean the fora are safe for work browsing.

The best thing to do is to find a boss who can appreciate XKCD.

Start by wearing an XKCD shirt on casual Friday and slowly ween your boss onto the comic.

I do that too, but for an entirely different reason.

And it'll work fine right up to the day Randall has a comic titled "Backdoor Fucking"
So, no.. if you're concerned that someone would report you for "Go Go Gadget Two Lesbians Doing It", checking the forum is also out.

I, personally had a similar idea before I joined the forums. why not? lets just see how many people want it, assemble volunteers for sorting the comics, and do it...

Yeah, I suppose if other people wanted to put together a different domain where they link to the comic and say whether it's safe for work, go for it.

In other words, y'all can do whatever you want, but no one on this end is going to set up some kind of rating scheme for you.
Unless stated otherwise, I do not care whether a statement, by itself, constitutes a persuasive political argument. I care whether it's true.

If we assemble volunteers for comic sorting, will davean or someone host it, etc?

No. davean won't, at least. There's probably a host of reasons that boil down to giving someone access to a server that davean or Randall is paying for yet not actually using. There's gobs and gobs of free web space out there, there's gobs of cheap webhosts, there's fricken Wiki software you could slap on some free wiki hosting site to do it.

I meant more like we tell d4vean which ones are safe and which aren't, and he assembles with whatever he's using for the xkcd website

Let's clarify something: No one on the forum moderation staff *can* do anything to or with the site architecture, that's solely davean's purview. He has both directly and indirectly indicated that neither he nor Randall have any interest in SFW tagging anything.

Now, those are factual statements. I am also going to deduce from those facts that they are not interested in going to the effort (regardless of actual size of said effort) to host a tagged mirror on any of the xkcd hardware. If by chance I'm wrong, I've PM'd davean so he sees this thread and can comment.

In the meantime, the answer is no, and we can all return to our regular routines. Locked.
