*bump*

Ok so, in the interest of keeping bots out here's what I did:

Code: Select all

<?php
// Because I'm tired of bot's registering.
if ($_GET['mode'] == "register" && $_GET['notabot'] != "true") {
 echo "Forum registration has been modified because I'm tired of bots.<br />";
 echo "Just in case bots follow the first link, which in phpBB is to advance to filling out a profile I've made <a href=\"http://YOURWEBSITEHERE/\">this link</a><br /><br />";
 echo "If you are exactly 13 years of age, or older as well as not a bot/spammer, then click <a href=\"profile.php?mode=register&agreed=true&notabot=true\">here</a>.<br /><br />";
 echo "Questions / Concerns: MY EMAIL<br /><br />";
 echo "Sorry for the trouble. But I hate having to delete 12 bot accounts a day.";
 exit();
}
?>

Going on 2 days now without a bot signing up. As it stands it takes away abit of the phpBB ambiance, but just taking the idea of adding another 'switch' to the physical url (as most bots probably don't search for the link but rather just go to the url directly, seems like a quick easy solution.

If you wanted to get really tricky you could have the first time they visit profile.php it selects a word from random of an array of words so the name of the variable could change every visit.

*edit:
This is what I did on my forum and I'm thinking it might work here, since most actual people registering are smart enough to follow the link.

Do most bots say their piece and then go away, never to return, when you delete their posts? I've noticed that annanalick seems to be unusually persistent

some do, some don't.

There was one, a month or so back, that just kept creating new screen names and spamming 30 or so posts at a time, all over the boards, including in established threads. It was a pain in the ass to track all of that down and delete it, and by the time you were done, it had created a new name and done it again

This last rash has been especially troublesome, because they've been including pornographic images which I don't terribly want to open at work, and I can't delete them without opening them.....

lame.

Just have to have a giggle at the two I just deleted.

1) "MILFs with big boobs". Contained a picture I almost considered leaving for sheer hilarity, this mid-40s looking woman bending forward, looking at the camera with this "Yeahhh young men still find me attractive, take that bitches" smirk, and a young guy behind her cupping her boobs and looking off to the side with his mouth gaping in surprise/delight. It was the most stupid looking picture.

2) A spambot with a whole disclaimer, asking us to leave OUR OWN SITE if we are not legal adults or do not approve of pornographic material.

Question for the Mods

Postby Hammer » Sat May 19, 2007 1:12 pm UTC

Sorry if this has been asked. I read through about 15 pages of spam threads and didn't see it, so...

Is there something the non-mods can do to help?

When we see a spam thread, it is helpful to you to be notified? If so, should we PM somebody (who?) or is there a thread to post in? Or is it most helpful if we simply ignore the thread and wait for a mod to notice it?

Not a spam thread, they're noticable and we'll get it the moment we're on-line. If you PM me, it will waste more time as I read the PM first.

Let us know if you see one actually in a thread though, because they're a lot less noticable.

Obviously, I can't speak for anyone else, but I know that spammer-chasing is a tedious and often thankless job. (Thank you for doing it, BTW.) If there is anything I can do to that would make this chore easier on you, I'm happy to do so.

What, no one else laughs at that?

I certainly do.

I do. By the way, can admins/raptors see who editted the post, even if it's a mod that did it?

I'm not sure if this has been covered, as I only skimmed the thread (at work... got notification of a private message, thought, "hey weird.").

Is there anything we should do about spam in private messages?

This bot hasn't made a single post, but I'm not sure how diligent its been about inviting numerous others to become its company representative:

Edit: Okay, it sent out 4 PMs, one to you, one to Anmorata, one to bbctol, and one to Silverwolfe. The latter two hadn't been read yet, so I deleted them. The bot is now banned.
