Well, they have accounts, anyway.

Accounts that I can change the password on and log into.

I don't know if this has been suggested or whatever, (please forgive me for not reading the oodles of posts. >_<) but I know of a couple of sites (one of which is mine) with a really effective method for preventing spambots. It's called the "Humanizer mod" (for phpBB obviously) and basically, whenever somebody signs up, they just have to answer the question "Are you human?" correctly (and it's a text-box, not a radio button, as bots can bypass that). Boy, that was quite a parenthetical sentence. Anyway, I've never seen a spambot on this one site that uses it, and it put a complete stop to them in my (small) community, so maybe it's worth a try?

These links tell how to implement it in phpBB:
http://www.underhill.de/downloads/phpbb ... anizer.txt
http://www.underhill.de/downloads/phpbb ... ertips.txt
In the second one, the "Tip2 - Use the following code to change the radio buttons to a text field" thing must be followed.

Again, I don't know for sure if this has been suggested, but I thought I'd throw it out there just in case.

That is genius, and so simple too. It's like pure, condensed essence of genius. Very elegant.

Except... surely there are some spam organizations that use humans to sign up the accounts?

Maybe some, but I'm pretty sure that if that doesn't stop the spam entirely, it'd at least cause a significant reduction.

A mod[ification] similar to the one you suggested has been suggested in the past.

However, I think that spam aren't at a particularly bothersome level these days.

Until then*, continue with your regularly scheduled programming.

Might be stupid, but is there a practical way that users can report a thread as spam? Added manpower for finding the threads, while only those with authorit-ahw can actually delete them.

Added this here as well, since apparently posting in something that's on the same page is wrong. RG really doesn't like me today.

Fun fact: Everytime someone uses a font I can't read, I go and add a 1 in front of whatever size they choose.

How long are spam threads really around? I mean I deleted maybe 3 earlier today when I couldn't sleep at 5am, and that has got to be when there are the least number of mods on so I can't see spam being that big a deal mid day.

If your urge to reply to them is so great that it actually bothers you to see one then you know what, maybe you're on the internet too much.

They're probably up for 8 hours at most, more like only a few. But it's more that newbs still post in them, and you guys probably wouldn't like looking for them. It would just make it easier for you. But hey, if you don't want us to help serve you, then I guess I'll go elsewhere to find people to brown-nose. I wonder if the Liberal party has openings....

What it comes to is that, if we're online and not busy, we're probably refreshing the forums now and then. And if we're not, it's because we don't want to deal with the forums. That is our right. We are not paid for this shit.

Which means, if we're in a position to delete the spam thread, we'll notice it and delete it ourselves, and your PM just becomes another thing we have to delete. If we're not in a position to delete it, no amount of IMing, PMing, or Emailing is going to change that. It will just annoy us.

Thanks for the offer, but there's nothing you can do. Sorry.

Np. Just thought more eyes makes it easier, although you can be refreshing, you can't be everywhere at once. Or can you? Mods with God powers, that's a scary thought...

Well letting us know just doesn't really do anything. Most of us, I think, start at the bottom of the forum (where the mod forum is) and work our way up (alright just me then?) so letting us know here is just like saying "Hey there's a turn up ahead" when we're going to find out about the turn on our own in a few seconds.

Spam threads don't physically hurt anyone, so it's not really an Oh me yarm GET IT OFF GET IT OFF type situation. It's more just an, "Well, that shouldn't be there *flick*" situation.

There seems to be an increase in spambots atm tho, must have deleted atleast ten over the past two days. I really do wonder what affects these fluctuations, or are they just percieved?

How about creating a thread where people can post what they think are spam threads? Easier than a report button, and only the mods/admins that are bored have to deal with it?

But again, if we're bored, we'll be either looking around the fora and thus will notice spam threads, or we won't be on the fora at all. So either way, the thread isn't helpful. I get the concern about spam and all, but there's really nothing that we can or should do. The system works fine as it is. I mean, if you notice a spam thread that's been hanging around for an entire day, then fine, make a post about it. But really, spam posts generally hang around for like 5 minutes before a mod notices and deletes it, so why bother with any kind of system to report it?

I think there are enough of us, with little to no lives that spam isn't really a problem. Other than people want to report it in attempt to be noticed as a "good citizen".

Spam isn't really that bad a problem. If we need to add to the n00b thread that you do not buy viagra off any link from this site than we'll do so.

Apart from that, stop being idiots; don't reply to or acknowledge spam.

Sorry for the bump. *Bump*

I'd just like to vouch on how easy it is to add in an extra question to the registration process. I had a bunch of sex bots registering and posting on my forum, but a quick add to the registration fixed that. It was incredibly easy. In the includes/usercp_register.php file, around line 267 (with stuff like empty($username) || empty($new_password) || empty($password_confirm)), just add to the end of it:
|| $_POST['wazzup'] != "Answer To Question"
And add the appropriate input box to the file templates/subSilver/profile_add_body.tpl somewhere after the image validation (marked by END switch_confirm):

Code: Select all

   <!-- edit -->
   <tr>
     <td class="row1"><span class="gen">Which pulls with more force, a <b>black hole</b> or a <b>small train</b>: * </span></td>
     <td class="row2"><input type="text" class="post" style="width: 200px" name="wazzup" size="6" maxlength="12" value="" /></td>
   </tr>
   <!-- End edit -->

Or some other question of your liking. Of course I don't know if this version of phpBB differs much, but I suspect it shouldn't. (As for the magical 3.0 release, I'm just getting complaints that it needs to update to the newest version, apparently 2.0.22)

Spam always bugs me. XD
I love reading quotes.

Given the size of the user DB and the fact that mods can't even ban users, let alone delete them (both powers lie with rapt...admins alone so far), I'd say most simply have their posts deleted.
