Spam Bot 2.0?

It was pretty weird. It was in the Wii thread in the Gaming forum. The post said something like "The Wii sucks for gaming." and the sig line was a link to camwhores.com or something. Not very bot like, but spam for a new generation.

It was probably just a human spammer. They exist. They are not bots. They're just a lot less common than bots.

Wouldn't be terribly hard to code a bot to look for certain often-used key words (like wii) in thread titles and post something relevant, would it? Of course I didn't see the post itself, so maybe it was more clever than that.

Well, we've had bots cut and paste other people's text into an almost legitimate sounding reply to the topic, we've had bots reference the forums and the comic, we've had bots post in the correct subforum for what they are botting on about (like there was spam for a photo competition in Art and Links), so I do not know if it would be too hard to code a bot to pick up key words and post in reference to them.

Sorry? My mercy knows no bounds. There are two ways for that to be possible. You guess which I'm thinking of.

...or all those ones who keep posting in the Custom Titles thread.

There's a "Spam Thread observations" thread in General.

But usually when there's nothing in the post, there's a website in the profile.

Often they don't even want people to click any links, they're just boosting a websites PageRank via sigs and the "www" button.

I can't get into your PMs without your password (or, I suppose, changing your password to something of my choice, which would be pretty annoying for you) so go ahead and delete the PM, and I'll just ban the user.

The word "link" is a link to some "//thefilmsproduction.com" and I wouldn't click on it even if I didn't work in a cube with my screen and back to the hall.

There. Now you know, and knowing is half the battle!

would it be possible to code the forums so that users with less than 10 posts can't post links/pictures nor display their sig?

I've seen that feature on other boards but I'm not sure how well it works.

We do that manually. Any modifications to the forum code are deferred until the installation of phpbb3.

Also, at that fluffy puff guy who posted the spammer's name, PLEASE DO NOT BOTHER REPORTING SPAMMERS; WE FIND THEM FAST ENOUGH. Thank you.
