Server... overloaded... forums... dying O.O

Postby Toeofdoom » Tue Jun 26, 2007 4:10 pm UTC

Has anyone else been getting really long load times and many time outs when trying to access the forums? cause I definitely have and other websites seem to be responding as fast as ever.

Also even at this time there seems to be well over 100 people online...

I've noticed that happening too. I'll come to this site, it loads fine, then close off IE or go to another site, then try to come back and it takes forever to load.

Another thing I've had problems with is when posting, it seems to take forever for the post to go through, and I end up with the dreaded "cannot find server" message. When I close IE from that, or go to another site, then some time later come back, I end up having to log back in. I make sure to click on the "remember me" option to keep me signed in.

It almost seems like its going in loops between working and not working, like its periodically booting half the people off or something :P but anyway, its working... for the moment...

Seems like it. I assumed things were either going catastrophically wrong or about to be perfectly fine when I managed to get SQL Error: 1053 Server shutting down (or something like that).

Anyway, thanks for fixing stuff.... :D

Probably not. It is more likely that I waded through the mollasses of the fora at the time to delete it.

And yeah, Davean, it seems to be fix-ed.

Edit: Spoke too soon...things are happening again, sortof maybe.

It's still a little sluggish, but not like before. This was the first forum notification I've gotten since this morning. And the first to which I actually got a timely connection all day. Oh, I hope it works!

Things started to spiral out of control earlier this morning for unclear reasons involving bandwidth to and from the disk. We killed some outstanding requests, and it might be sluggish as it gets back up to speed, but it should be roughly okay now.

The fora are slow for me still at times, and I keep getting this when posting:

Ran into problems sending Mail. Response: 550 entries.

DEBUG MODE

Line : 165
File : smtp.php

I also learned that it doesn't mean my post wasn't submitted. I ended up with a triple-post before I realized it.

Never seen that error message, but it can take good 30 second or more between clicking the 'submit post' button and getting to the next page. It's been happening for a while, but I've never thought to mention it before.

Last night, I hit "post"... got up to get my daughter out of the toilet. I got a drink. When I came back, I just saw my post go through, and the "Go to Message / Go To Forum Index" page pop up. That was 3-4 minutes I was gone.

Nooo, there's no server slowdown...

I went through and did some more DB optimizations but we are pushing fairly close to needing a HW upgrade. Please tell me if this helped all of you. (I sort of need to know what sort of performance people are actually seeing)

It's not happened to me in the past few days, but at a few points last week (over the entirety of forums.xkcd.com) I had this problem. It seemed to clear up after a few minutes though
