PyS60: The Best Thing Ever®!

Postby RahulKolasseri » Tue Mar 09, 2010 2:43 pm UTC

Symbian recently ported over python to its phone, and it a fully functional version, and even has access to the phones messaging, camera, etc. Here's its wiki:http://wiki.opensource.nokia.com/projects/PyS60. Never has it been easier to develop for Symbian. This calls for celebrations!

Technically this isn't 'that' new. I've been using PyS60 for my major project/dissertation at university since October and that was version 1.4 (or something like that) then. However, version 2 that came out in February is much improved though and provides access to a lot more hardware, particularly things like digital compasses and accelerometers, etc if present.

Although I'm no expert feel free to ask any questions if anyone has a play with it. Once my project (an augmented reality 'world browser' that doesn't require a data connection) is done and marked I'll put the details and app up online somewhere and let the fora know if anyone's interested.

Yeah, the new 2.0 is much, much better than the 1.x. Now there are even IDE's that run on the phone itself, to do PyS60.

perl > ruby > python

Phones need moar perl.
They say it's unhackable; I think it can be hacked.
They say it's fast; I think it could be faster.
They say it's the best; I think it can be done better.

But perl isn't really that good for large programs as it is for small "getting stuff done' scripts. Python, on the other hand, is great for small scripts, and not too shabby for large programs. But then, to each his own.
