Something to laugh about

Postby xGeovanni » Thu Dec 22, 2011 11:07 pm UTC

My father asked me to make a program to help him win online poker (Programmers = Genies)

I gave him this:

Code: Select all

import time, random

moves = ["Fold", "Small Bet", "Call/Check", "Medium Bet", "Large Bet"]

while True:
    print("Scanning...")
    time.sleep(random.randint(2, 6))

    print("\n", random.choice(moves))

    input("\nPress enter to restart\n")

It's not that funny as there are real programs that help you win online poker by calculating draw probabilities and other player's betting frequencies.

That's really mean, I hope your father doesn't gamble away to much money because he trusts you and your program.
Eventually he'll find out that it's not working and then he'll be disappointed with you, either because you're such a bad programmer or because you lied to him.
As korona says, there are really some possibilities for coding a program to help win poker games.
Maybe you would like to think about what you did and change your mind.

anyway, merry christmas

Having written one or two poker AIs, I think it's funny.

And I can't stand the other commenters moralistic behaviour, I suggest you get off your high horse and enjoy life a little.

Personally, I find it a bit disturbing to give a family member a program that claims to solve a problem involving money, when it actually doesn't.

But that's just me.

You could write a program to pick lottery numbers. Then your conscious would be clear.

Anything that might discourage someone from gambling is the act of a saint as far as I am concerned. Besides, unpredictable strategies aren't even that bad in poker. Anyone who tries to find a pattern in the madness will get bitten eventually. Particularly if the person using the strategy doesn't give anything away (because they don't know they're using an unpredictable strategy.)

While it is good to be a bit unpredictable (that means: You don't always play the same way with the same cards), completely random playing is bad at poker. You throw away good cards, and as soon as others note that you play at random you are easily exploitable.

It could be worse, at least it wasn't:

Code: Select all

while (true)
print ("all in");
readLine();
end

That would have been funnier, I have to agree.
