MFC or Win32?

Postby Number » Fri Aug 03, 2007 4:32 am UTC

I'm going to do a project, a fairly simple c++ RPG for windows. Should I use MFC or not? I have done relatively easy windows programs before (othello, tetris, and a few more) both with and without MFC, if the experience makes a difference.

I always recommend the SDL library to anyone who writes a game: it's multi-language, cross-platform, and, well, good.

Most people seem to really dislike MFC. I've used it, and I don't see the issue, but editor support is pretty important so you'll want VS Pro.

Another alternative is to write the GUI in C# and use Windows Forms, or you can take iw's advice; SDL however won't (I think) give you bindings to windows widgets, so you'll be able to do opengl stuff yourself and it may hive you opengl widgets, but these of course won't be native. Depends on how you want your look and feel.

Other alternatives are WxWidgets, which is somewhat similar to MFC but cross platform, and Qt.
