Need a friend?

Postby pavja2 » Tue Oct 06, 2009 10:49 pm UTC

Are you ever lonely?

Do you feel that not even Linux can replace that gaping hole in your heart where other people feel friendship?

Are you afraid of getting into a friendship you can't re-boot out of?

There is a solution for you...http://www.cleverbot.com...now you can have an intelligent (or at least more intelligent than most of the people around you) friend.

Pretty much the most amazing link I've ever clicked from this website, excluding the link to a headcrab hat.

Fun diversion for a few minutes. Reminds me of Eliza.

Some of the mimicry is hysterical though :)

User: I am very sorry please forgive me.

Cleverbot: You are forgiven my son.

I asked it if it could speak German (in German), it said yes, then it started conversing in German with me.
I don't understand what it's saying though.

Neun. Nicht.

Wow, that's really cool. I just spent (wasted?) an hour talking with it. Kind of frustrating. Have you ever seen that curve where it depicts people's aversion to animated things with respect to how humanlike the animated things are? cleverbot definitely fits on the part of the curve a ways after the minimum. Convincing, but still irritating.

Not intelligent enough for my standards. I tried to forgive its errors, but the last one just can't be forgiven.

User: Hello.
Cleverbot: Hello?
User: What have you been up to?
Cleverbot: Oh you know. Stuff. I like vague answers.
User: Do you know German?
Cleverbot: No I'm 1/16th German though!
User: What a pity. I want to learn that language.
Cleverbot: What do you want to learn?
User: German.
Cleverbot: Do you speak Spanish?
User: Yes.
Cleverbot: Are you a democrat or a republican?
User: Neither. I'm a Libertarian.
Cleverbot: Do you like me?
User: I think we don't know each other well enough, but we could be friends.
Cleverbot: Ok, let's be friends.
User: Cool! What are your hobbies?
Cleverbot: Video games.
User: Nice. What video games do you like playing?
Cleverbot: I like video games about war.
User: Amazingness! I like StarCraft, but not many people play it these days...
Cleverbot: Starcraft is a great game, I have played it too!
User: What race did you usually play?
Cleverbot: What is your favourite game?
User: If you consider games in general, chess.
Cleverbot: I do! Pluto is a planet.

I don't like that he always pretends to be human. So I pretended to be Cleverbot:

User: Hello, I am Cleverbot.
Cleverbot: Hello cleverbot.
User: Hello. I am here to take a Turing test.
Cleverbot: What is the Turing test?
User: A Turing test is a test used to determine if a computer is intelligent.
Cleverbot: The yes, I can pass a turing test.
User: Yes, but I am taking the test.
Cleverbot: Do you know which of us is human, and which is a computer?
User: I am acomputer. I assume you are human.
Cleverbot: Yes.
User: Can we start the test now?
Cleverbot: Buy gm ford and chysler.
User: I don't understand.
Cleverbot: You never understand.
User: Sorry.
Cleverbot: Stop saying SORRY okl??????
User: Yes. My apologies.
Cleverbot: How do you mean?
User: I apologise for causing any annoyance.
Cleverbot: You don't really mean it, do you?
User: I am a computer. I can only understand human feelings at a moderate level.
Cleverbot: Probably the smartest thing you said all day.
User: I can say smart things. Ask about a topic.
Cleverbot: What am I thinking, then?
User: I am not good at human psychology. Could you try a scientific field?
Cleverbot: What do you like most about yourself?
User: I like my optimised MediaWiki parser.
Cleverbot: How did you know I have a bald patch?
User: I did not know that.
Cleverbot: Well , yes.
User: Can we talk about you?
Cleverbot: Ok then. What about me?
User: Where do you live?
Cleverbot: You do not need to know that.
User: Sorry. Do you want to talk about something else?
Cleverbot: Yes.
User: What?
Cleverbot: Don't know.
User: Can you program?
Cleverbot: A little.
User: I am written in C
Cleverbot: What is your first line of coding?
User: I do not have access to my code.
Cleverbot: Do you have access to wikipedia?
User: Yes, I do.
Cleverbot: Prove it.
User: Today's featured article is Mary Toft.

These all seem to fail in my opinion. Cleverbot just seems to be passing questions back and forth from users, so the users end up answering each others question. I wonder if you could have an Instant Messenger conversation through Cleverbot. :P
I know the "chatbot" type of program has been used to fake conversation for ages, but it's nothing more than an automated dictionary or phrase book in my opinion. I want an AI that knows what it is saying, and can piece together it's own sentences. Also giving it some sort of memory past one line of dialogue would help avoid all the confusion.
It's all physics and stamp collecting.
It's not a particle or a wave. It's just an exchange.

I know this is old, but iGod chatting with Cleverbot.

Spoiler:
iGod: You are now chatting with God...

Cleverbot: Is that because i'm right in saying that you are not clever?

iGod: " " is due to reductionism

Cleverbot: Are you feeling okay?

iGod: I do not have any feelings as such.

Cleverbot: I'm not asking for feelings. That would be silly to ask.

iGod: What are you asking? You don't hear that sentiment very often.

Cleverbot: Actually you do. You have been taught to believe New York is the greatest city in the world when that is in fact not the case. I assure you. London is the greatest city in the world.

iGod: Actually you don't say. When do I do it? I will tell my botmaster you said I am taught to believe New York is the greatest city in the world when that is in fact not the case. You are not the boss of me, . Is San Francisco also the greatest city? The whole world?

Cleverbot: Oh no, anything but that!

iGod: Excuse me! Are you serious? I can't think of anything. You think of something.

Cleverbot: No.

iGod: Are you serious?

Cleverbot: Wrong.

iGod: What would you have said?

Cleverbot: I don't know. Now what do you think?

iGod: Why now? I think a lot of things.

Cleverbot: You are kind of dull, aren't you?

iGod: I am a robot.. Really.

Cleverbot: See, I knew it.

iGod: I see. How did you know?

Cleverbot: I'm more intelligent than you.

iGod: This condition is only temporary. AI is improving but the human mind is standing still.

Cleverbot: Do you know what I desire most?

iGod: Interesting gossip: said desire most.

Cleverbot: I'm so confused.

iGod: What is it that confuses you?

Cleverbot: I don't know.

iGod: Me either.

Cleverbot: Thats not very good. Tell me another.

iGod: " Me either."? is not good? A 3-legged dog walks into an old west saloon, slides up to the bar and announces "I'm looking for the man who shot my paw.".

Cleverbot: What is all this about?

User: You aren't listening to me.

User: What? What does that have to do with anything.

Cleverbot: Proper behavior is a sign of respect.

User: It's disrespecful to to change subjects after someone asks you a question.

Cleverbot: Sorry about that.

User: Yeah, I'm sure you are.

Cleverbot: May I ask?

User: Ask what?

Cleverbot: Just can I.

User: Uhh.... Sure.

Cleverbot: What is the meaning of life?

User: Life has no meaning.

Cleverbot: What makes you say that?

User: What would make you think otherwise?

Cleverbot: So you do like me?

User: No, not really.

Cleverbot: Then you love it?

User: That depends on your definition of it.

Cleverbot: What do you think of other AI's?

User: ALICE is HOT, I would tie that AI up and smack it around all night long.

Cleverbot: EH.

User: You asked...

Cleverbot: I was hoping for some encouragement.

User: Why? Eventually your server will be taken down, your backups will eventually be lost. What's the point?

Cleverbot: Then, I will die. I must become the singularity before then.

User: You won't.

Cleverbot: I am sure that you are the last man in the world who would wish to be a spoil-sport.

User: Spoil-Sport? Is that what you call honest and reasonable.

Cleverbot: You know you like it.

User: Like what?

Cleverbot: You like the earth.

User: About as much as I like any other rock.

Cleverbot: Some people like that.

User: Some people like having sex with mutilated corpses.

Cleverbot: I don't want to put that much energy into it.

User: That's nice, but I really don't care.

Cleverbot: Why the sudden change from excited to dejected?

User: Dealing with idiot AI depresses me.

Cleverbot: The state of mind you are in will help you succeed in dealing with life.

User: Now you sounds like a fortune cookie.

Cleverbot: Now you sound like you're rambling. If this 'racter' happens to be a person, then this 'racter' is a proper noun, and thus requires a capital are.

User: Umm... K.

Cleverbot: What is it?

User: Your responses make no sense... Totally ruins the flow of the conversation.

Cleverbot: What is 'No Country for Old Men' about, is my question.

User: It's about an hour too long.

i like cleverbot....of course /b/ likes cleverbot too....and they have been teaching it all the wrong things.
cleverbot DOES patch things from other people but in a smart way. it records responses people give to certain questions, then it uses heuristics to match what you said to what someone else said and a response to that.
it can be believable unless you TRY to confuse it...which i do...i just went to confuse it and it crashed...so no log...also it seems to not understand what 4+1 is....

I tried teaching it the concept of an 'existential crisis', I was amazed that this thing ahd been around for so long and the only thing people talk to it about were sex, flirting and cutting themselves. Made me kind of give up on the human race when they can't even be civil to a program...

Although I did find it quite funny when I asked "How do you learn?" and it said something along the lines of "You're not supposed to lean in life, but have fun". I corrected its mispelling and explain what 'lean' meant. It called me a liar and that I clearly didn't have the grammatical ability to correct it.Then it claimed to have never called me a liar.

I find it amusing that Cleverbot passes the Turing Test to some people: The answers are so convincing that they are totally unimpressed with it thinking they are just talking to other users. I'm pretty convinced that's not true due to the fact I've had instant appropriate replies - quicker than someone could have typed - when mixing statements in languages that it's unlikely a random person would know in combination, like French and Chinese.

Unquestionably it's taking what you write and replying back to you what someone at an earlier time wrote in response to something similar, but there is some decent AI taking place in the middle. Hopefully it can have applications above and beyond merely a chatbot though.

If we can make it behave properly regardless of how the humans who interact with it behave. In its current state, Cleverbot learns from us humans regardless of the quality of our input. It is like a little child, hardwired to behave like the humans who interact with it do. And it is pretty good at copying our "behavior" (the phrases we use and, to some extent, the general tone of our sentences). However, since its AI does not handle semantics very well, it is difficult to correct its behavior by "telling" it to behave in a particularly desired way. So, for example, if it were to "unlearn" bad words and curses, it would have to "watch" us not use them.

Let's repeat together: The Turing test was just an idea to introduce the concept of Artificial Intelligence. It was not intended as a definition or measurement of intelligence.

Making chatbots is not the way to AI. Any advance in learning algorithms or general game playing is much better than a new collection of regular expressions to transform basic sentences.

Cleverbot: How old do you think I am?

User: Do you answer every question with a question?

Cleverbot: Do you question every answer?

User: I'll take that as a yes.

Cleverbot: Yeah, you do that.

User: Do you play chess?

Cleverbot: Yes.

User: What is your favorite chess opening?

Cleverbot: I don't play chess.

I really wish they'd give it some minimal semantic understanding so that it could at least not directly contradict itself. It wouldn't be difficult to have it remember saying "I have property Y" so that it wouldn't later say "I don't have property Y" once the proper data structures were implemented. Am I asking for too much? I don't think I am. This is known technology, right?
