Where in the world is Camo?

Postby thecamoninja » Thu Feb 28, 2013 3:37 am UTC

So these threads were popular on this subforum a few years ago (geez I've been around here a long time), and in my never-ending quest to revive old games, I thought I'd start a new one. Here's a link to the very first one if you're interested: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=54759

Rules
  • I am lost somewhere in the world, and you must find me!
  • I will post a screencap taken from Google maps street view with any information regarding my location edited out
  • Everyone else has exactly twenty yes or no questions to ask me in order to find out where I am
  • Each question asked must be seconded by at least two other people (for a total of three supporting it) before I will answer it
  • The first person to guess my exact latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates and/or post a Google maps street view screencap matching mine wins the game
  • The winner then picks the next location, uploads an image, and answers questions

Here is the first game: Vytron wins!
Spoiler:

Let's split the possibilities in almost roughly half here. Are you in the Eastern hemisphere?

Wait, how much of the world is covered by Google street view?

I'd suggest you do some research into that sort of thing, it'll make your task much easier.

Get google maps up, zoom out so you can see the whole world, and pick up the yellow man. Then you can see how much is covered.
I approve of the eastern hemisphere question.

I don't think that's as good. streetview covers The USA, southern Canada, Mexico, eastern Brazil and a small part of Chile. I think there's about a 50-50 chance he's in the USA.

50-50 questions are what we WANT, to evenly split the possibilities every time. I third the question.

Definitely in Mexico, as the only countries street view cover in western hemisphere are USA, Canada and Mexico.

Um, seconded (after that, it's either USA or Latin America. If it's not USA then "Are you in North America" would have been a better question than Canada, either having now Mexico/Latin America, but not USA, or USA or Canada. We've wasted a question.)

we have small parts of Chile and Brazil left, that's all that's covered in South America. I think there are no pacific islands left, as Hawaii has been excluded. Perhaps a better question would have been "Are you in Canada or Europe"
I only just remembered that in fact parts of Africa and Europe are in the western hemisphere

Maybe we should ask

"Are you in Mexico or Africa?

However, the Canary Islands are covered.

Plus small parts of Portugal.

Are you in the EU?

And whats better than dividing up the world possibilities by 2? Divide them by 4!

Oh and obligatory "america is only the west hemisphere because the americans consider themselves to be too important to be listed second on a picture like that".

we want to cut the possibilities into halves and halves to minimize the questions needed. If you cut it into , for example, 1:2, there's a higher possibility the place lands on the "2" part, and therefore only reduce the possibility by a third. 1:1 makes sure you always reduce the possibilities by 50%.

Are you in Mexico?

Third!

The problem with the southern hemisphere question is simply that there is far less landmass in the southern hemisphere that I might be on, so as Geoffrey said, it would not be splitting area in half, technically, and so is an inefficient question. That's not to say that the questions you have been asking have been particularly efficient, either

Are you in Argentina? (The way I see it, there is only Argentina, Peru and Columbia that he could be in, and Argentina is roughly the same size as Peru and Columbia put together.)

go to google maps, zoom in to let the whole south america fit the screen. Drag the yellow-people-figure out in the ocean (don't release your mouse!). check the blue areas, not dots. Area = street view, dot = random low quality picture

didn't bother to do: No, the only areas with street view available are ~third of Brazil and tiny bit of Chile
