So now the game theoretical question is: is Adam winning more if he starts a new auction or if he just waits for people to self destruct like that? Because, by my last count Adam's profit per bid is only going up

Haha!

-You can bid a maximum of 10 cents higher than the previous bid, and a minimum of 1 cent higher.

I think this is disadvantageous now for Adam, as people would be willing to increase the bids much higher than that by now :D

Indeed, post 41 is illegal, therefore all subsequent posts are, therefore the current highest bid is $1.30

oh wait, it doesn't say "a maximum of 10 cents higher than the previous legal bid", we're okay :D
and, incidentally, it doesn't say we have to bid in dollars

I bid €1.75

Yes. This is essentially how QuiBids and their ilk work. On those sites, you pay a fee for each of your bids rather than paying your full maximum bid, but it's a similar concept.

Sold! To GeoffreyY for $2.18! Enjoy your dollar, don't spend it all in one place (unless... please see below for a very special offer).

Patzer's bid of €1.75 was certainly valid, but due to fluctuating exchange rates and fees, GeoffreyY's bid ended up being higher. Obviously patzer is still on the hook for his €1.75, which we'll call $2.50. Plus the 50c fee for an illegal bid.

Round 1:
Losers
Vytron ($0.11)
Sean Quixote ($0.20)
cemper93 ($0.40)
thecamoninja ($0.80)
Dr. Diaphanous ($0.88)
Reecer6 ($1.00)
GeoffreyY ($1.18)
Moose Anus ($1.20)
Rosewinsall ($1.85)
patzer ($3.00)

Winners
Adam H - $10.62
Everyone else - $0.00

Round 2
Up next for auction is $1 plus half of my profits for the next round!* There's potential for MEGA MONEY here, so bidding will start all the way up at $0.10!

*If I lose money you must pay me half of my losses, natch.***

I would like to announce that I am starting up a betting pool on the side on who will win the auction - might it be patzer? Perhaps Reecer? Dr. Diaphanous? Will Geoffrey take it again? Place your bets! If you'd like me to, ahem, "calculate" the odds on a competitor, just let me know!

Wait Adam, did you count the bids that were over 10 cents higher than the previous bid as valid? Or did you not, but allowed future bids to be higher than them (because it doesn't say "10 cents higher than the last valid bid")?

Because, I think I could bid One Million Dollars, which would be invalid so I don't need to pay anything :), but THAT would allow people to start bidding right from $1000000.10, so this interpretation may be good for you, if people would want that dollar that much...

It would be the height of stupidity to bid $1 000 000.01, whoever did this would be losing nearly $500 000.
