So is this.
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family Anatidae on our hands. –Douglas Adams

But is this? According to philosophy, this may not be a post and we're being tricked by our perception in this consistent illusion. Just because a bunch of people perceive the same thing, it doesn't make it real.

How are you sure of that? You could make a post saying "This post is real because it contains text saying such" in a dream, and you'd think it was real until you woke up. What makes you so sure that you're not dreaming right now?

Because dream-world is stranger than reality. Except for those times when reality is stranger than dream-world.

The dream-world and reality are one and the same as long as there is no actual or potential evidence to the contrary.

Yup, I'm with faubiguy on this. You could never be sure that something is real, unless you also define the things happening on dreams as "real".

Hmm, nope, if this was a dream the string would probably have changed...

Yeah, try it, a way to know if you are dreaming is picking up a book, now, check the cover, open it in some page and read something, now, go back to the cover, and now, go back to that page. Either the cover of the book has changed or the page in the book has changed. Now, you can try to lucid dream.

Well, its only useful if you make a habit of doing reality checks in real life so you'll remember do them occasionally while you're actually dreaming.

It's curious, I don't recall ever doing a check in real life, but every time I do a check it turns out I'm dreaming. In practice, I'm only suspicious of being in a dream when I AM in a dream. So I have checked lots of books and they always change as I read them, but I have never checked one when awake to see if I'm asleep. It's kind of odd...

Or maybe all those times you were actually awake and it's the dream world with consistent logic. You're dreaming right now of course.

It's possible, but then we'd be entering into crazy "maybe you're a brain in a vat and everything that you've ever know is a dream and the people you know and interact with don't even exist and are there to populate your dream" territory, solipsism, and all that. I'm not willing to go that far because if one happens to be on reality and actually awoken but still wonder if one is still dreaming, it's pointless to have definitions for "real".

Unless I'm dreaming right now, if I have the presence of mind to ask myself if I'm dreaming I also know the right answer. One time I realised I was dreaming and I wasn't enjoying it so I tried to wake myself up by hitting my head against the window in my dream.

Quest for Epic Points1 score table:

Code: Select all

Player          | Successes | Failures | Attempts |
================|===========|==========|==========|
Whizbang        |0          |1         |1         |

1Epic Points is defined as any score of at least 50,000 points from a single post. To qualify as an attempt for Epic Points1, the first post in the chain of post must announce that an attempt for Epic Points1 is being made.

True, but you can't know that you know the right answer.

The whole point of realizing you're dreaming is that once you do, you can control what happens on the dream. Hitting your head against the window looks like a waste...

Attempt 2

Vytron, that's an epic amount of points. Too bad you didn't declare it beforehand. So now you're just lucky, not epic.

Oh, true, true, common sense is rare in dreams, and it's common to just waste it anyway because you can't just think of what to do in the dream...

Also, yeah, being epic isn't worth all the failures on the scoreboard :P

Spoiler:
I'll be checking this the next following hours so Whizbang can't become epic today. Prepare to give up or accumulate a bunch of failures!
