Floor 1280 contains several dozen supercomputers, each of which is running a detailed simulation of the xkcd Skyscraper. The simulations are detailed enough that the inhabitants live lives about as rich as ours are, and are unaware that they are living in a simulation.

The simulations are not at all identical to one another; each represents a completely different skyscraper. There are, however, some reoccurring patterns. (For example, Floor 17 is missing from at least half of the simulated skyscrapers.) It is as if each one represents a way the tower might have been built, with the same builders and the same general architectural goals, but with different decisions made along the way.

Most of the simulated skyscrapers also contain floors like this one, whose computers are also simulating dozens (or, in one noteworthy case, quintillions) of additional skyscrapers. Which also have floors like this one, and so on. It seems fair to say that almost all versions of the xkcd skyscraper are virtual rather than real.

Some philosophers have theorized that our version of the skyscraper is probably also a simulation. They point to how statistically unlikely it would be that we just happened to be living in the real one. They also point out that the various physics anomalies observed in ours--impossible objects, variable laws, sentient floors, magic portals, etc.--probably would not exist in top-level reality. (There is debate about whether to include the laws of quantum mechanics on this list. On the one hand, those laws are found even on otherwise "normal" floors. On the other hand, they're exactly the sort of glitch one might expect a simulated world to exhibit.)

Floor 1283 contains the first prototype for the supercomputers on 1280. It is a mess consisting entirely of jumper wires, ribbon cables, prototyping boards, solderless breadboards, electrical tape, crocodile clips, point-to-point wired resistor bridges and a pastry roughly 1.6 kilometers across. Although it appears to have no active components it's first test was a resounding success: upon receiving the usual test question ("What is two times two?") it quickly returned the distribution of hidrogen atoms in the surrounding cubic parsec of space and it has been running uninterrupted ever since, mostly because everyone's worried it might not start up again at all if it was turned off. What exactly it's running right now is unknown, but a note on a particularly large capacitor says "Do not interrupt, will finish in five minutes".

Floor 1286 contains a turing machine that is computing Loader's number. Don't step on to the tape, or you will be overwritten, and even worse, the Turing machine will be messed up. The Turing machine's marks are all armed guards, created and destroyed with only one purpose: Don't let anyone mess the Turing machine up.

Floor 1287 contains millions of battery-powered smoke detectors, covering pretty much every square inch of the walls and ceiling. (Except for a small poster near the exit, reading "Never again!")

Unfortunately, changing the batteries in millions of smoke detectors is even harder than removing pennies from millions of boxes. So every few seconds, one or another smoke detector gives off a piercingly-loud beep to warn of low battery.

As a result of this noise pollution, the floor has largely been abandoned.

Floor 1292 is windowless, which makes it difficult to determine from the inside whether it's located within a gravity field or is continuously accelerating upward with a nuclear fireball on its heels.

Further contributing to the ambiguity is the fact that in the stairwell, a barrier has been erected blocking the stairs down. The barrier has a sign on it that reads: "attn downward traffic - stairwell out of order - take portal to Floor 1282 and follow 'detour' signs to reach your destination". A nearby dais looks like it was probably intended to hold a portal, but a sign next to it reads "portal temporarily relocated to Floor 1282 for reentanglement; back soon".

Floor 1305

The laws of fiction cease to exist on this floor and nobody is sure whether it's fictional, or we are fictional and it's real, or something else weird. The only real thing about it is a poster that says "FLOOR 3209 IS DEAD."

Floor 1309 is home to the Bureau of Getting the Floor Numbering Straight. Who's paying for it is a mystery, but it's quite well funded. In fact a branch helping local goverments to clear up streets and squares with oddly numbered houses has been recently created and could be reached by mail if anyone could determine the postal address of the building. They do have a brass plaque next to the door, so you know it's serious.

The next floor contains a sign and a table.

The sign reads "Floor 1310 [/] reservation required". It also has a little BGFNS logo in the corner.

The table is set for a romantic candlelit dinner ... for three. Including three plates. The song "Triad", by CSNY, is playing softly in the background.

Hmm.
