Bump
If you're going to post a link pointing to a post containing a link to a post containing a link to a post containing the rules, why not post a link pointing to the post containing the rules? Next thing you know is you gotta go through a link maze to even see the actual thread...

that's how flicky keeps winning! he still remembers the actual parameters of the thread, but we forget because we're too lazy to click thru all the links

i move that we should append a new rule to the game stating that: the rules of the game, in their entirety, should be copy/pasted into the OP of each new game thread

Yes, that makes sense. But making sense is too easy, so I'll be copying the rules of the game into every post I make in this thread so that nobody can forget :P

Vytron wrote:This game is easy, just make a post, and if one week later you're the last poster, you win.

It's called Bump because most people are expected to keep bumping it so others don't win.

But we can talk about something while we're at it!

The cursive form ϑ was retained by Unicode as U+03D1 ϑ "GREEK THETA SYMBOL" ("=script theta"), separate from U+03B8 θ "GREEK SMALL LETTER THETA". For the purpose of writing Greek text, the two can be font variants of a single character, but θ and ϑ are also used as distinct symbols in technical and mathematical contexts.

its weird because if you squint at it or just dont pay too much attention it looks like a normal theta. but they you notice all the extra squigglyness and it gets confusing. why cant we just have a nice, straightforward circle with a line?

Because writing θ requires lifting the pen off the paper whereas ϑ can be written in a single fluid motion.

In the handwriting of everyone at university the horizontal line doesn't actually touch the elliptical line.

People writing on chalkboars are apparently quite sloppy then. Xi in said handwriting looks like a vertical squiggly line (good luck telling it apart from zeta).

Yes, that's what teachers wrote on when I was a lad, and we sure paid attention because they were fast and reading them was hard, not like these newfangled pieces of wood nailed to the wall that you can just read as slow as you like. Kids these days, they don't know they're born... *shakes cane angrily*

I always thought of "chalkboard" as American anyway. We always called them "blackboards" (even if they weren't).

ϑ doesn't even look that much like theta to me. In that font on my computer, it looked like a 9.

"Blackboard" and "chalkboard" I think are pretty much interchangeable here (even if they're green). Though I think whiteboards are probably more common now. (And I'm not aware of any generic term to refer to both of them, except "board" which is too general without context...)

Whiteboards started to become more common as I progressed through school, then I went to uni and it was all blackboards again.

It was mostly blackboards through high school for me (except for the science room, which had a glass pane on the wall serving as a whiteboard) and so called "smart boards" appeared during the last one or two years. Those were pretty entertaining, because our teachers always had some trouble with them, thus negating whatever benefit the interactive projector could've had.

We had one room with smart boards. The lecturers all thought it was a waste of resources, thank god.

Can't imagine studying math without a proper blackboard either. Whiteboards are ick.
