There could be a US/UK distinction here - the term "egg roll" is something I've only heard on American TV shows.
I just looked up https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring_roll and all of them are the kind that's in pastry. I think America is outnumbered on this one.

In my brain egg roll and spring roll the same thing. But I've also learned not to rely on my brain too much

Not exactly this way, but my mom is the "starts from the big bang" kind of storyteller.

See, this is why you need to talk to mine if you want to slow down time!

Spoiler:
Although, for the full effect, my dad needs to be there as well. Mom frequently interrupts herself to double-check unimportant details with him.

For example she'll tell me that Phyllis, the Canadian accountant she sat next to on the plane to Spain, reminded her of Harold's wife--Harold being the dentist from Iowa, who shared their dinner table on a cruise back in 2005. Then Mom and Dad have to bicker for several minutes about whether Harold's wife's name was Helen or Alice, before deciding, as they always do, that Mom's first guess about Harold's wife's name was right all along. Only THEN can I be told that Phyllis's son was a world-class ice dancer, and here's the funny story he told Phyllis about what happened to him in a post office in Argentina.

Yeah, I know, I've got to let go of the quaint notion that conversation is more about the transmission of actual content than it is about establishing all this bewildering interpersonal dynamics crap.

Mom's an extrovert. Her conversations are primarily about relationships--with her audience, and with the people she meets. Even her constant bickering with Dad (over tiny details that make no difference to the story) is about reinforcing her relationship with Dad, while she's talking to me.

I find all this complicated social stuff exhausting, but she finds it reinvigorating, so I do my best to make her happy. Dad and I are both very quiet introverts, so maybe these strategies are the only way she can get the kind of animated reactions from us that she seems to need.

That's fine, sweetie. Shall I skip the reminders to floss your teeth, and move right on to the excruciatingly awkward personal questions?

It's a mother's duty to drive her kids bonkers, and I take that job very seriously.

Is that what Neil Diamond is talking about in that "Cracklin' Rosie" song?
