Fred paused, his fingers hovering over the keyboard, and considered. What the hell was he doing with his life anyway? Sure, his job paid all right, and he had a livable apartment. He had his friends at the office, and that nice old lady down the hall that always seemed so happy to see him. On the surface, everything was okay.

But here he was, another night, another session in his life spent posting in the various fora he perused. Seems like that was all he spent his free time on. Maybe that was okay, every now and then, but it was consuming--no, had consumed his life. Even in the day, when he was sitting at his desk, skilled typist's hands pecking out code like bees spreading pollen. That was what coding was all about, wasn't it? The reproduction of ideas, the spreading of one's memetic code. Maybe that was what drove him to the forums, as well; the desire to spread his thoughts and views in more mediums than code no one in the overworld would ever see or consider.

But looking over the forum, over his browsing history, gave him pause to reconsider. "Guess the next poster?" "Insult the poster below you?" "Superhero rumble?" "Picture pwn4ge?" What the hell was all this? This wasn't memetic reproduction. This wasn't the pollination of minds. This wasn't even mental masturbation. This was the imagination's equivalent to going to a strip joint and not even getting a lap dance. This was his life and mind wasting away under the constant outflow of useless information.

He pulled his hands away from the keyboard, and sighed. So what was he to do? Go to the movies? Catch a hockey game? How was that any different? Glancing up above his shining monitor, he saw his small row of books. Five novels, the only books he'd read in the over two years since he'd gotten this apartment. What did that say about his current state of mind? He liked reading. The last book he'd read had been Sir Apropos of Nothing, and the remembrance of that story brought a wry smile to his face. He picked it up, and leafed through it, chuckling at some of Apropos's insights.

After a time, he set the book aside, and closed the forum window without a second thought. The library was closed by now, he was sure of that, but he was pretty sure he knew where it was, and his library card functioned statewide. Checking his watch, he decided to turn in a little early tonight. He would have to catch the early bus if he was going to get a book checked out before he went to work.

It had been a long wait, but it was time to step out of reality again.
