In a statement "if X, then Y", if X is false, then the whole statement is true. For example: "If two plus two equals five, then I am a Chinese hatter."

Yep. That's because of the principle that anything, true or false, can be proven from a false statement, e.g. if you start with the premise "2 + 2 + 5" then you can prove anything.
